That's Why
Natsume loved Mikan. And it wasn't just puppy love, he knew he loved her more than anyone else in the world—and being the kind of guy he was, that was definitely saying something.
Though how she got to him was something even Natsume couldn't say for sure. She definitely caught him off guard. He didn't know how she managed to get hold of his heart when he was so sure he'd locked it up years ago.
The possibilities? It was probably her bubbly personality that got everyone to, if not instantly, then eventually, like her.
It could also have been the fact that he loved to tease her and make fun of her. In fact, he used to hate being around everyone—with the exception of Ruka and Youichi, of course. But Mikan was a girl that he had absolutely nothing in common with, except, probably, for the fact that they both cared for the people that meant the most to them—though he never thought the day would come when an annoying girl like Mikan Sakura would walk in and not only sign herself up on that list of people Natsume cared for, but signed up even people he used to loathe with a passion.
Digging deeper. She probably got to open up that dark side of him. He asked her, a person filled with all that light, to keep herself away from the darkness. But instead of keeping out of the darkness, she lurked around it a little to see if she could get Natsume out of it as well. She could. And she did.
Mikan stole Natsume's heart and Natsume is perfectly aware of it. He couldn't argue about that, he knew it was true. She had him the moment she stuck her bubbly nose into his locked up heart called the darkness.
