KING HAGGARD'S SONG
A Musical Number For A Broadway Adaptation Of "The Last Unicorn"
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Back in January, while watching various clips related to "The Last Unicorn" on Youtube, I was struck with the idea to make a Broadway adaptation of the animated classic. Why no one has thought of such a brilliant concept before, is beyond me... (shrugs) But, regardless, I cemented the birth of this brainstorm by writing the very first song for the musical-a special number performed by the tragic villain, King Haggard! ^_^
When you're finished reading, please be sure to leave feedback when you're done. I'll take anything from comments to constructive criticism, as long as they're not flames or delivered in an overly-harsh, stern, or mercilessly-nitpicky manner.
And, now, for a brief copyright & disclaimer...

The lyrics to the following song © The Mouse Avenger (that's me).
And now that my copyright & disclaimer is finished, let the fanfiction begin! Happy reading!
(Spoken intro)
KING HAGGARD (to Lady Amalthea): My secrets guard themselves. May yours do the same. (departs to his private quarters)
In this palace, dim & dreary,
Here I ponder, weak & weary,
Mournfully musing in the gloom
That fills my castle's every room,
Vainly waiting for the sun to shine
O'er this land, surrounded by the brine...
Every day has naught but sadness,
And how my heart yearns for gladness!
'Las, there's little one can do
To give me happiness anew,
Except to take me to that forest glade,
Away from winter's chill & sorrow's shade...
Whisk me 'way to gleeful glens of green,
Livened by the kiss of eternal spring!
Let the dewdrops dance upon the grass!
Flow, crystal waters, pure & clear as glass!
Sweet flowers, bloom & blossom in the light,
Bedecked in all the rainbow's colors-
What a beautiful, blissful sight!
In flourishing, tall trees, the birds all sing
Lovely songs that make a man's ears ring!
The animals all frolic, dance, & play,
Leisurely whiling their carefree hours away!
And, best of all, the unicorns run free,
Full of giddy gaiety & glee!
Oh, precious steeds of alabaster...won't you come to me?
Alas, I do not dare to roam
Far away from my old home,
For there's a kingdom that needs keeping...
I'll just content myself to weeping
While I look upon the roaring sea,
The only thing that still brings joy to me...
What good would it even do me, pray,
If I went to the forest anyway?
The unicorns are all but extinct there,
And, now, they'd just be castles in the air,
Were it not for the secret that I keep,
The secret hiding in the azure deep...
Yes, deep beneath the waters, they remain!
The unicorns all thrive, come shine or rain!
They all belong to me, & only me,
And whenever they appear, I love to see
Their glistening manes & skin of ivory white,
As their great horns all shimmer in the light,
Vanquishing the darkness of the night!
As long as my prized pets are here with me,
From my old heart, youth's joy will never flee!
Relationships do wither, memories fade,
And the people who we cherish pass away,
But as long as I may look upon the sea,
I see a glimpse of sweet eternity,
And all the peace & pleasantness it brings...
