Friends
I lay awake on this quiet night listening for you my friend. You and I have been friends longer than most of my friends at school. They are always saying that I am stupid for having a friend that is a wolf and lives in the wild. But they will never understand you. We share a bond that is beyond them. I remember the first time we met. I was hiking in the forest gathering information for an ecology paper that I had to complete. Then I heard an animals cry to my left. At first I was about to ignore it and keep walking but I felt compelled to see what it was. Then I walked up to an old oak tree and when I looked around and there you were. At first glance I was mesmerized by your beauty. Your fur was a beautiful grayish white mix that if I were to run my hand through it would feel like silk and your eyes were a unique shade of blue that resembled a sapphire. It was then I saw what had caused you to cry in pain your hind leg was caught in a crude bear trap and had probably broken the bone. I started to get closer but then you heard me approaching and got into an offensive stance and bared your fangs at me. I realized by the tension in your muscles that you weren't going to let me get close that easy. I took of my bag and crouched low to the ground showing I wasn't a threat. You seemed to notice this and relaxed but still kept your eyes as I got near you. I slowly reached for the trap and very careful pried it opened and removed your leg from it and then I threw it in the river were it would never harm anything again. I then turned back around to inspect your leg and was relieved that the trap hadn't broken the bone and only caused a flesh wound luckily I had a first aid kit that could fix this. As I started to clean and wrap up your wound you never took your eyes off of me as if you were searching for something in me. When I was finished and started to pack up my things something came up behind me and started to rub against my back when I turned around I was surprised when you started licking my face as if you were saying thank you. When you finished I smiled and realized that you and I were going to be friends for a very long time and we continued to see each other mostly at night and we would walk on the trails and lay down in the grass and look up at the stars till midnight. Now I lay here in my bed after our nightly run thinking about what the future holds for us. Then I hear your howl knowing that it's not out of sorrow but saying I'll see you tomorrow. Now I'm laying here with a smile on my face realizing that our future is going to be a good one so goodnight and sleep well my friend.
