Spoilers: "Joy" [5x06]
Setting: Immediately following "Joy".
When House let himself outside, he walked out to the garage before leaning against the door. What was that about? He thought as he sighed, closing his eyes. How is it that I always do stuff like this? Immediately the answer came to him: he gets jealous way too easily when it comes to those who're close to him. That's what happened with Wilson and look where that had gotten him. It had even happened again, today, actually, with that darn baby. He had acted like the jerk that he was all because he was afraid of losing one of his best friends. He probably should've told Cuddy that, but he was never good at doing the vulnerable thing. Probably a throwback to the days of John House,he mused as he ran a hand through his hair. His not-father always did think emotions were bad. "What-? Are you crying again, boy? You know that's a sign of weakness!" He coughed once, wondering if he should go back inside.
Cuddy slowly went back into the nursery, back to the place that once was filled with joy and all kinds of possibilities were now a monument of heartbreak. She was so sure that she was going to be a mom; she checked and double-checked everything, making sure that all was in order. I made sure of everything! Why did this happen? She sighed, as tears slowly made their way down her cheeks. Maybe House was right. Maybe she wouldn't have been a good mother. But then why did he all of a sudden change his mind? It doesn't matter, he's a jerk, she told herself, wiping her eyes. He was always like this, playing mind games with her and everyone else who came in contact with him. She got up. Maybe he hadn't left. Maybe he was still here. Maybe. She slowly walked to the front door, barely breathing.
House started back up the front walk, wondering what he'll say. He was sort of scared about that. He heard the door open and looked up. There, in the middle of the doorway, was Cuddy. She gave him a small smile. "Hey," she said, coming out onto the porch. House smiled back albeit tentatively. "Hi." He stuck his hands in his pockets, unsure of what to say, too afraid to do anything else.
Cuddy came down the steps a bit hesitant. When House opened his arms, she fell into his warm embrace. It felt safe and comforting. Perhaps, for a few minutes at least, they could both forget their pain and misery.
House stood there, breathing in her citrusy scent. He felt weird. He felt a small smile tug at his lips before breaking into a wide grin, for he realized what it was. He hadn't felt it in years but yes, he hadn't forgotten it. What he was feeling now was pure joy. He was now joyfully hers. "I am yours, Lisa," he told Cuddy quietly. "Joyfully yours."
