Weird scene appeared in my mind of Kurama staying human and getting old. Couldn't ignore it, so I made a oneshot.
I don't own the rights, or much else for that matter.
He stood in his ordinary spot, right outside the window, hiding himself in the protective branches of the tree. Crimson eyes focused on the lone figure in the room.
Bizarre.
As often as he'd watched him, as often as he'd stood here, it still didn't make sense. Why would he choose this?
It wasn't like he didn't have options. His partner could change forms on a whim, becoming the powerful Youko whenever he wanted, shedding the aging human persona he'd so long ago adopted. There weren't any restrictions on that, as far as he knew. So why did he choose…
Kurama slept peacefully, his long hair tied in a loose ponytail at the nape of his neck. No longer was it a vibrant red, but a soft gray-white. It had changed a lot over the times…and so had he.
Hiei shifted uncomfortably. It wasn't supposed to be like this.
The fox wasn't that stupid, right?
Machines whirred and beeped out steady rhythms, a soft electric hum filling the air. Kurama slept on, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips, perhaps in recognition of the familiar presence outside his window.
Maybe he was.
He frowned. Seeing the once powerful youkai deteriorating slowly like this disturbed him. Disgusted him. And yet…
Here he was again.
It hardly surprised him when a weight settled next to him on the branch, accompanied by a doleful sigh.
"Its times like this where I wish I'd found a different line of work." The pastel messenger of death made her presence known, pink eyes misted over slightly. "With all the times he's brushed close to getting himself killed, I'm a little surprised that this is how it ends…"
"Hn."
Botan didn't read too much into the reply. It was more than she'd expected, to tell the truth. It was a bit of a shock to her that he'd be here at all…the last she'd heard, Hiei was busy managing his realms in Makai.
"Was…there anything you wanted to say before…?"
He considered it, but…
"There is nothing to say. He made his choice, and now he'll face the consequences."
What was there to say to him? He'd thrown away everything to be human.
Everything.
Including his extended lifespan.
He turned once again towards the window, utterly confused by his partner's actions. He seemed so at peace…
Before the shinime could ask anymore questions, he darted off.
"Stupid fox."
I apologise now if it seemed incoherent.
Writing on a whim when I really need sleep probably doesn't help readability...oops.
Review, please, because it helps.
