The television sets all across Panem flickered into life, and a booming voice called for the attention of all who were listening. Families quickly moved to face their televisions, worry and anxiety thick across the nation. Today was the day. What would it be this year? Reaping day may be far off, but the horrifying potential of this year's Quarter Quell loomed like a shadow over the citizens' hearts. Again, the nation as a whole wondered, what torture would their children be subjected to this year?
The nervous anticipation was palpable. It zigzagged and shimmered like lightning from district to district as the new President, President Atell, began to speak. "Greeting, Panem!" She declared cheerfully. "I hope you are all doing well."
After a brief pause, she went on.
"I am sure you're all aware of this, but for clarification's sake, just in case, this year is our 125th Quarter Quell! Oh, how exciting! People here in the Capital are already fired up over this exciting event. Now, I believe it is time fr what we've all been looking forward to! Let's see what the big twist will be this year, shall we?"
A young boy hurried out into the view of the camera, carrying a box. Inside that box, the citizens knew, lay the fate of their youth.
Atell reached into the box.
The nation held its breath.
"This year..." There was the sound of drums rolling. "The 24 tributes of Panem will be placed into 6 randomly selected teams. They must work together to survive. Slaughter of a teammate is forbidden and will result in immediate death implemented by the Gamemakers. Four victors may rise," Atell read from a small card.
Excitement. Disbelief. Hope.
Four victors. FOUR victors! The odds were certainly in their favor.
