Parking Brake?
..Because, quite frankly, Sulu just doesn't get enough love.
Disclaimer: Don't own, so don't sue. But, gosh if I did... *ponders*
A/N: A small-ish drabble about Sulu. I hope I have his age right…*crosses fingers* - ah well, - Enjoy!

Serving as the helmsman, aboard the USS Enterprise certainly was a stressful job - …that is, it would be if your name wasn't one, Hikaru Sulu. The young twenty-three year old was somewhat an oddity amongst the rest of the crew aboard the USS Enterprise (that is, not counting Pavel Chekov who came across as 'scarily clever' at just aged seventeen.) He didn't really talk much and was fairly shy (although, ironically Chekov and he, seemed to get on like a house on fire…) His interests were a peculiar mixture: Fencing, Botany and Judo to name a few, even though his initial appearance didn't really strike as the 'athletic' type (when it came to fencing.) Even Captain Kirk had a hard time believing it.
It was quite a common joke, amongst the rest of the bridge members that the best way to distract Sulu was to leave an unlabelled flower on his desk, which would cause him to frantically try and find the label or identify the plant. This, however was not true, and caused him to become annoyed when anybody even mentioned the name 'green fingers', with him in hearing range.
In all honesty, Sulu found it difficult to keep up with the pace of the Enterprise. All that running around and shouting? So not his style. However, this was a little fact which Dr McCoy found hilarious.
"Come on Sulu, wake up! Not got your daily dose of Coffee yet?!"
His first time as helmsman aboard the Enterprise was…embarrassing to say the least. Helmsman McKenna had been unable to make the call, so he found himself sitting in his place and ending up making a complete fool out of himself:
Is
the parking brake on? …
Have you disengaged the external
inertial dampener...?
In fact, Scotty still regularly teased him about it. But then, he would always come back with the fact that Scotty, when out looking for any good looking girls, would go for the first thing that walked past and winked at him. Usually, though, at this point Sulu would end up with half of Scotty's scotch poured all over his uniform, as he protested otherwise.
…Nice.
Although, despite his initially 'geeky' appearance, Sulu was classed as one of the main bridge-a-deer's (a rather odd nickname, which was made up by Chekov. He claimed that it had some Russian origin to it…,) besides – if anybody needed any tips on hand-to-hand combat, they should ask him.
His fencing skills were rather…cool.
