When I watched Frodo leave Sam I could not keep from thinking how much they loved each other. This would not leave my mind.
A Heart's Goodbye
Tears streamed down the Hobbit's freckled face as he watched the boat sail from his perch atop a rocky ledge. Frodo was leaving him, going to a place he would never be able to follow. He had not told his friends of his decision until Gandalf had called for him to take his place aboard the Elf ship. Samwise had never found the courage to utter the words he had kept hidden in his heart for so long, because he always thought he would have another chance. He loved Frodo now and always. Now, he was left to carry his heavy heart to his grave.
Sam's mind wandered over the last few years of his life after the Quest. He had married Rose like the good little Hobbit he was; they had children – one boy and one girl. He loved his wife and his offspring dearly, but his heart was no longer his own to gift. It was a tragedy that Sam had not realized this before their marriage. Rose was a sweet woman who cared very deeply for him. His children were rays of sunlight in his days. They spent their days working in their garden and teaching the youngsters. He lived a very happy, traditional life.
Yet for a Hobbit who had seen so much during his time with the Fellowship, a traditional life was boring. He tucked his restlessness away and curbed it as best he could. He had spent many a night by the fire with Pip and Merry chatting away, Frodo sitting silently watching his cousins. Those nights were the highlight of the 'family man's week.
Watching Frodo with his crystal blue eyes staring into the fire, the strain of the Quest upon his furrowed brow brought a strange comfort to Sam. Each laugh from the frail man was a gift, each smile a reward. Just knowing that Frodo was alive was of great relief to the red head. He endured the juvenile behavior of the cousins just to spend time with his close friend.
The love that burned deep in his heart for Fordo, the love that brought tears to his eyes now as the ship faded beyond his sight, was more powerful than any other force of nature he had encountered in all his days. Yet it was not a lusty love, it was a true love, a pure love. While the Elf folk may take lovers of their own sex, Hobbits did no such thing.
Yet in a sad way Samwise Gamgee would have rather spent a celibate life at the side of Frodo Baggins, than the charmed life he led now, but that would be unfair to say into the wind. Frodo had embraced Sam's family as if it were his own. He had been happy for Sam to find Rose's love. Rose had cared for the feeble Hobbit as if he were her own husband. The children had delighted in his presence as they did for their own father.
The entire family loved him. Sam felt a smile tug at his teary face, Sam's family was Frodo's. His children would tell the tales of the brave Hobbit who saved Middle Earth from the cursed Ring of Mordor. Slowly, Sam made his way down from the hillside. The news he brought back to the Shire mixed inside his mind with hope for the future.
