Edward could see them with his razor eyes, winged, silver-light notes dancing with the dust motes through the air. The tune was frail as her bones beneath his hands, sweet as the song of a flightless bird.
Normal. Insubstantial.
Human!
As measures were spent, another tune joined the pavan, dissonant strains of Shadow music that changed the key, pulling the melody to darkened places. He recognized it, familiar as his own face, as the night he had brought to stain her flesh and eclipse the gleaming morning of her life.
Even HE was there, arriving unbidden, howling his call in a native theme that wove both forests and moonlight into its net.
The music had known that the wolf would come.
