Something To Think About
He watched her gather her bags in preparation of leaving. He briefly wondered if he should say something, but decided not to. It wasn't his place to comment on her personal life, or her life in general, unless it had bearing on their work. She gave him a quick smile and turned to leave. He decided to leave as well. He might as well work on his boat and get drunk, as stay at NCIS sober. It wouldn't matter which he chose, he's be miserable and thinking about her out on her date, and with a man that wasn't him. He stepped into the elevator behind her and pressed the button for the parking floor.
She never saw it coming. One minute he was leaning against the wall of the elevator, across from her, while she mentally prepared for the date she was about to go on. The next moment the emergency stop was engaged and he had pressed up against the wall. He paused, lips inches from hers, looking her in the eyes.
He hadn't expected to act so suddenly. It wasn't even a conscious decision to invade her space. His body moved under the direction of his heart, and left his mind out of the choice.
"Something to think about on your date tonight." He breathed, before lowering his lips the rest of the way to hers.
The kiss felt like it went on forever. It was soft and cool, then hot and hard by turns. She felt her blood boil, and when they broke apart, she whimpered softly. He backed away from her to lean against the wall of the elevator, and re-engaged the lift. They stared at each other intently.
"What about Rule #12?" She whispered.
"Some rules are made to be broken." Came his answer. She nodded and pulled out her phone.
"James, this is Kate. I wont be able to make it tonight. Something came up." She said. There was a pause as she listened to the other man speak. "No James, I don't want to reschedule. The something is permanent. It was nice to meet you too." She clicked her phone shut and looked back toward him. He had a smirk sketched across his face.
"No need to think, Jethro. I already know I'm in love with you. I was just waiting for you to decide I was worth it."
"Decision made, Katie. You're my end. I don't want anyone else ever again. You're my last chance." He said, uncharacteristically open.
"Good because I want you to be my last too. " His smile widened and he started toward her. They met in the middle of the lift and he kissed her gently one more time before the doors opened. He put his arm around her shoulders and walked her to her car. Before she got in, she turned to him.
"I don't want to spend tonight alone." He nodded.
"Follow me to my place." She pressed one last kiss to his lips before she got into her car. He walked a few spaces down to his own.
Kate followed him easily to his house, a modest white house with a small, well-kept yard, and a long single driveway. He pulled all the way in and she parked behind him. His house was sparsely furnished; medium woods accented a plush couch and chair. There were black and white photos all around. One was of the entire team, one of Ducky and Abby dancing, one of Tony and McGee, one of her alone. The last was a photo of a pretty blonde woman and a little girl, his first wife and his daughter, Shannon and Kelly. He wandered into his bedroom to change out of his work clothes while Kate studied the last picture.
"I'll take good care of him." She whispered, and then turned away. Jethro stood, frame in the doorway. He dressed in worn jeans and a t-shirt, for going shoes for the time being. She felt ridiculously over dressed in her outfit. Jethro smirked at her as she returned to her car to retrieve her bag. She borrowed his bathroom for a few minutes and returned a moment later, comfortable dressed in a similar fashion.
He pulled her down onto the couch next to him. Her head rested on his shoulder as he held her close. They were content and they were together,
