Doesn't really contain any spoilers, even if it was inspired by Madness Returns
She was truly entrancing when she floated. In vast, open air she looked so lofty and...temptingly helpless. It seemed as if when her back was turned to him, and she faced the vast world alone, was when she let her fear show. Despite his taunting and riddles, he secretly pined for her to show her true face to him. To be able to see her mind through unguarded green eyes...it was a guilty pleasure of his.
A cat could always dream, he supposed. But there was something just as intriguing as her helplessness. It was her unfeeling, calculating green gaze that sent shivers down his bony spine.
The high Elizabethan collar of her dress kept her back straight, and he grimly wondered if Wonderland had put her in this dress on purpose. Just to taunt him, as if saying he couldn't truly influence her fight to recovery.
He was forever restricted to the sidelines, watching her grow up into a lovely young mad woman. Alice's madness was a big part of why he was so fascinated with her. You could even call it infatuation, but that was the only time you could hear him admit it.
Glancing down at his clawed paws, he felt his permanent grin slip almost into a frown. It was definitely a grimace, mirroring inner emotions he rarely ever showed. Not in front of Alice, anyway.
He would always be reminded of why he would only be on the sidelines of the endless battlefield that was her mind.
Alice was the Beauty - if not a mad one- and he was just...the Beast. As he watched her fight, with a deadly dancing-like grace, he was nearly comforted.
Even if he was the silent mascot, who could only spout riddles and not feelings, he could be content with the fact he would always watch over her. That was a slight reassurance, the thought that maybe an "if" could turn into a "when"...
