A/N: This is my first ever fanfic. So nervous. I hope it doesn't suck. I'm so not a writer.
Oh, and I do not own any of the characters or anything BSG. I am no where near that creative of a writer. I am just playing.

She looks down at the box and smiles.
Dog tags. Typically used to help identify the dead and wounded after a battle; they symbolize everything military. Simple, sterile, metallic. Simplifying recruits to a basic numerical identifier, removing all personality from a soldier.
Kara Thrace disagreed with this description entirely. Her dog tags seemed to have become a symbol of herself; her heart.
She had given what seemed to be a piece of herself to Sam that day on Caprica when she, Helo, and Sharon had left the resistance to return to the fleet with the Arrow.
A simple gesture; a token: one of her dog tags for him to remember her by and a promise to return. She split her tags at that moment and ultimately split her heart.
One piece for Sam.
One remaining for Lee. Unknown at the time, but ultimately the most important of all.
Over time and the crap with New Caprica, it turned out that Kara only ever needed one tag to start with. The one that remained around her neck, resting next to her heart.
So when she dropped her tags into the box this evening, it wasn't just for the Dance. For a fight. Starbuck had dropped the tags into the box as a challenge to Apollo. But it was Kara who was pulling them out.
She looked over her shoulder a little guiltily at the man slouched behind her: bruised and bleeding, still wearing the boxing gloves from over an hour ago. It was hard to believed that not that long ago they were trying to beat the shit of each other. Now things seemed to be back to normal again. She truly had missed him.
She had been missing the other half of her heart without Lee.
As she retrieved her own and Lee's tags from the small metal box she realized that just as their dog tags were tangled and intertwined, so will their lives forever be.
fin.
