"They've blocked the stairs - Reducto! REDUCTO!"
Harry's heart leapt: so these four had not eliminated all opposition, but merely broken through the fight to the top of the tower, and, by the sound of it, created a barrier behind them.
"Now, Draco, quickly!" Said the brutal faced man angrily.
But Malfoy's hand was shaking so badly that he could barely aim.
"I'll do it," snarled Greyback, moving towards Dumbledore with his hands outstretched, his teeth bared.
"I said no!" Shouted the brutal faced man; there was a flash of light and the werewolf was blasted out of the way; he hit the ramparts and staggered, looking furious. Harry's heart was hammering so hard it seemed impossible that nobody could hear him standing there, imprisoned by Dumbledore's spell if he could only move, he could aim a curse from under the cloak-
"Draco, do it or stand aside so one of us - " screeched the woman but at that precise moment a loud yelp from just outside the door alerted the death eaters to another presence.
The woman ran to the door and looked out. Snape was lying at the bottom of the stairs, his face showing considerable signs of agony.
"Snape! You clumsy old fool!" The woman screamed, but while her back was turned, Greyback had re-emerged and launched himself on an unsuspecting Dumbledore.
Harry watched in horror as the headmaster was eaten in front of his very eyes. Within a few minutes all that was left of the old man was a black and withered hand.
"Excellent," purred Greyback pulled a stand of long grey hair from his teeth. "Time for next course I think," he smiled looking at Draco fondly.
Draco returned the look but with pure terror.
He had just enough time to yell to no one, "Harry-" before he was also devoured hungrily by the werewolf who had been his father's old friend.
Harry thought the situation was so ironic that it would have been just as plausible if Snape had reached the top step and killed Dumbledore himself. But what Snape had really intended to do, Harry supposed, he would never know.
