Regina rolled her eyes at the sister as she walked back into the empty medical tent, she had just finished making the beds in there, however the Matron had gone over her work and stated that it wasn't good enough before ordering her to redo it, that meant that she had to go over 40 beds. She pulled on the edges straightening them, there wasn't anything wrong with it, not that she could see anyway, so she had no idea why the ward Matron had her panties in a twist about it.
She begrudgingly straightened the bed, she wasn't going to completely undo them, that would be crazy, she was already wasting her time having to do this. They were in the middle of a war for heaven's sake, what on earth was the point in stressing over a bed that was a little wonky, people were dying on the front, being blown limb from limb and all the Matron was bothered about was Regina's bed making skills. It was no secret that Regina and Matron Blue had quite the loathing when it came to one another, but Blue had been out to get her since she arrived so Regina wasn't going to hold back when it came to expressing her dislike for the stuck-up woman.
Once she felt that she had sufficiently done her job, she made her way out of the tent, avoiding the deep swamp of mud just outside the flap as she hopped onto the wooden path. Shaking her head, she looked off to the distance, you could just about make out the battlefield from the medical base, the smoke rose from the ground and at night you could see the flashes of guns and bombs on no man's land. It was shocking at first, she'd lost the contents of her stomach more than a couple of times in her first few weeks on the front, but you had to harden fast, otherwise what use were you?
She'd been here for just over six months now and had seen all there was to see, men had died in front of her as they cried out for loved ones back home. Then there were the ones that just wanted a hand to hold as they slipped away, she'd sing to them softly, not that she was a singer, she had far from the voice of an angel but it seemed to bring them comfort in their final hours. Lately, though it had been quiet at the medical base, too quiet for their liking, everyone was on edge, waiting for the next hit, surmising about when that might be.
Regina had a feeling of dread in the pit of her stomach, something just didn't sit right, she knew she could just be getting herself worked up, but the idea that there might be mass casualties at any time weighed heavily on her mind. When it came to those situations you had to do what was necessary to get through it. She was lost in thought when she was nearly knocked off the boardwalk by the surgeon general who was holding onto a man who could barely stand.
"Nurse Mills, would you help this soldier?" the general instructed,
"Yes, of course," she nodded, hurrying to his side and taking the man's hand, wrapping his arm around her to hold him up as the general walked away.
"Don't worry, I'm a nurse," she smiled softly as she led him into the tent where she had just finished making up the beds, she knew it would be the best place to go without being disturbed by the sometimes dreadful noises from the main medical tent, she knew that some of the cases in there at the minute were horrific and she didn't want him to have to see that.
"The uniforms a bit of a giveaway," he winked playfully.
"You do know it cannot be classed as winking when I can only see one eye," she scoffed at his forward nature.
"Worth a shot," he smirked shaking his head as she helped him into the tent.
"I thought you were supposed to be injured," she huffed as she assisted him onto the bed.
"I am injured, but not so bad that I can't recognise a stunning woman when I see one."
Regina felt her cheeks heat up at the compliment and looked down at the ground, she could safely say it had been a while since someone had noticed her, she was usually covered in blood or other bodily fluid so didn't really get many comments on her appearance, "well as flattered as I am, maybe you should stop it with that flirtatious behaviour so that I can treat you properly."
"Why is it distracting?" he rose a single eyebrow as he watched her move to pour some water into a basin.
"No," she bit down on her bottom lip as she lifted the bandage from his eye and assessed the extent of the wound, touching it gently, "this is swollen, the cut isn't too deep, but you may need some stitches," she sighed, taking the dirty bandage off and throwing it in the hamper to be washed. She knew that the trenches were a dirty place, but she wished more than anything that they wouldn't put dirty bandages over wounds, it just made her job ten times worse, especially when she had to deal with infections.
"What made you want to be an army nurse?" He asked as she perched on the edge of his bed gently cleaning the wound before picking up the needle and beginning to neatly stitch the cut.
"I wanted to help people," she admitted, "people who needed it the most."
"That's very noble of you."
"It's the least I can do, I want to play my part and hopefully help put right some of the things that are wrong in this world." That was the truth, for the most part, she had also seen it as a chance to escape her mother and the upper-class society she had grown up with. She had seen her mother throw lavish parties with masses of chocolate, alcohol and other rationed items and that had been the last straw, she just had to get out of there. Regina placed the needle down and tied a new bandage in place. "There, hopefully, that should heal in a week or so. I'll give you some more bandages, you need to make sure you keep them clean, I know it's hard, but you don't want to risk infection."
"I guess that means I'm cleared to go back," he sighed, looking up at her, she could read the expression on his face, he didn't want to go back and she could imagine, she had an idea of the horrors that awaited him back on the front, sending them back could most likely mean that they were signing their death warrants.
"I'm afraid so," Regina huffed, finding one of his hands and giving it a brief squeeze. "Good luck," she leant in and pressed a kiss to his cheek, "give you something to think about whilst you're out there," she smiled.
"Oh, I'll definitely be thinking about that," he breathed.
With one last smile, she walked away leaving him inside the tent, praying that maybe she would see him again one day soon. Regina sighed, looking down at the mud coating the board work and bumping into someone who was heading towards her, "staff nurse Mills, it would help if you looked where you were going," an unimpressed voice sounded.
"Apologise Matron," she scoffed as she looked up at the annoying woman, she wished that she would just give her a break, why did she have to constantly be at her throat.
"I have been waiting for you to come and find me, I do hope it hasn't taken you all this time to straighten up that tent."
"No mam, I had a patient I was tending to," she stated, trying to keep her cool, oh what she wouldn't give to push Miss Up-her-own-ass in the mud.
"At whose authority?"
"General Colter's mam," Regina informed her, she knew that he was the one person that Blue wouldn't try and go up against, he held more authority than she did and therefore she submitted to her rank, below him.
"I see, well, I shall be going to review the medical tent and I best find it shipshape."
"Oh, I am sure you will mam, and whilst you do that I shall go find some meaningful work in which to partake. I can assure you I did not join this regiment to be your skivvy, if you'll excuse me, mam," Regina nodded before turning and walking as fast as she could in the opposite way, she knew she would probably be severely reprimanded for her words, but she hadn't been able to resist, she couldn't take another minute of being put down by that nasty woman.
She slipped into the main medical tent spotting General Colter as he reviewed a patient's wounds, "sir," she smiled as she moved to stand beside him, "I feel that it may be sensible of me to inform you that you may be receiving a complaint about my conduct from Matron," she rolled her eyes.
"What have I told you about chatting back Regina," he chuckled.
"It is hardly my fault Daniel," she grinned before looking down at the poor soul laying in the bed, "do you think he'll make it?"
"It will be a matter of time, I can't honestly say," Daniel sighed as he ran a hand through his hair. Regina reached a handout and squeezed his arm, she knew he hated it when there was nothing more he could do for a patient and they had to wait to see if they lived or died. When she had arrived at the front she had been more than surprised to find that her childhood friend was the general surgeon, but it had certainly made her feel more comfortable, she knew he was a top surgeon and she didn't have to worry about not having anyone to talk to whilst she was there. "So, did you fix up the Captain?"
Regina's eyes widened, "Captain?"
"Yes, Captain," Daniel grinned as he washed his hands in a bowl of water before moving to the next patient and beginning to check them over.
"I didn't know he was… I thought… oh," she would have never kissed him in the way she had if she'd have known his rank, it was highly inappropriate of her but she'd simply assumed that he was a private or corporal at best.
"Look at you Mills, getting flustered over an officer."
"I… excuse me, there is something I need to be doing," with that she scurried out of the tent, heading back to the one she'd just come from, hoping that Blue hadn't stuck her beak into her business. Oh god, what if he had told Matron about her misconduct, she dreaded to think what Blue would have to say about her staff kissing patients, even if it was just on the cheek. When she arrived in the tent it was empty and the bed he had once been inhabiting was now properly made, he'd gone without a trace, she just hoped that he hadn't told anyone about what she'd done before he left.
Blue had been standoffish with her all evening, glaring at her over dinner, but Daniel had chosen to sit with her to eat so Matron daren't say anything about what happened earlier, especially when she had already tried going to him about it. Daniel had snapped at her saying that she needed to lay off Regina and give her some proper tasks to do, something Regina knew Blue would not appreciate one bit.
"Do you think there will be an attack tonight?" Regina asked as she looked at Daniel, they were sat on the bench outside his quarters talking as he smoked a cigarette.
He let out a puff of smoke and shrugged his shoulder, "I hope to god not, but I have a horrible feeling."
"Me too," she nodded reaching for his cigarette.
"You don't smoke," he stated.
"I know, but I think this is a bloody good reason to start," she huffed, taking a drag from the joint in her hand and letting out a cough as she handed it back to him, "no."
"Don't like it?" he chuckled.
"Definitely not," she laughed as she wafted the smoke away from her. Her laughter died down as she leant back and gazed at the sky, the stars were out and she closed her eyes letting out a heavy sigh, "I fucking hate this life."
"It's not all bad," he shrugged, wrapping an arm around her and giving her a little hug.
"Have you seen where we are? In the middle of bloody nowhere fighting a losing battle."
"Well, that's defeatist talk if I ever heard it."
"Coming from the pacifist," she scoffed, laying her head on his shoulder, "I'm just sick of going to sleep and waking up every day with this constant fear looming over my head," she whispered.
"Me too Mills," he agreed.
She needed to change the subject and think about something else before she lost herself into a rant about how it wasn't fair and how the war was pointless and pathetic, "when was the last time you got a letter from Maggie?" Regina asked, threading her fingers with his.
"One came this morning," he quipped, moving his other hand to pull a piece of paper out of his pocket.
"Would you read it to me?"
"Sure," he grinned as he unfolded it,
"Dearest Daniel, I do hope that you are keeping safe out there and that you're looking after my little sister for me. You have no idea how shocked I was to find from Regina that you were placed in the same facility, I am glad that you have each other. Hopefully, you will be keeping each other safe and sane, you know what Reggie is like though, so make sure that she doesn't wear herself out, the same goes for you, my love. Missing you every day, your ever-faithful, Maggie."
"I miss her so much," Regina stated, her older sister was married to Daniel and they both worried about her being home alone with three children to look after. Her other sister Zelena had moved to London and was working with the secret service on some kind of mission to infiltrate enemy lines. So, it was safe to say Regina worried about her sisters every day, but she was sure that they were just as worried about her.
"So, do I," Daniel agreed, "its Agnes' birthday in a couple of days."
"I know, I'm sorry that you're having to miss it," Regina whispered as she squeezed his hand, thinking about her four-year-old niece who just so happened to look exactly like her.
"Yeah, me too. I…" a loud booming in the distance cut him off and they both shot up from where they were sat, "looks like we were right. Mills, go to the edge and meet the wagons."
Regina nodded and hugged him briefly before running as fast as she could up the hill to the border, from there, she could see the bright flashes from the battlefield, she had known this would happen, had felt it deep down that they were going to have a busy night ahead of them and unfortunately, she had been right.
It was much worse than they had ever anticipated, there were dead and fatally wounded men everywhere with nowhere near enough beds to sleep all of them, many laid on the floor of the boardwalk outside, wallowing in mud something that shouldn't have been allowed to happen. Regina was trying to house as many of them as she could, but there just wasn't any room, they had resorted to moving people into the canteen area, there were men without limbs laying on the dining tables. The air was thick with smoke and mud, the haunting cries vibrating around the camp.
Her overalls were soaked crimson from the men who had bled out in her arms. "Just here sir," she stated as she sat a man with a less major injury down on the bench she and Daniel had been sat on before, "someone will see you in due course," she nodded.
"Thank you, nurse, have you seen the captain?"
"The Captain?" Her stomach sank as she thought of the man she'd taken care of earlier that morning.
"He was last onto the field, account of his eye and all, haven't seen him since."
"I see."
"Lieutenant Scarlet mam," he stated, extending his hand to hers.
"Staff nurse Mills," she replied taking it dutifully, "the captain, can you tell me his name?"
"Captain Locksley madam."
"Thank you," she smiled briefly before hurrying off along the slippy boardwalk, to add insult to injury the rain was pounding down on them, bouncing off the already water-soaked planks making them deadly. She opened the flap to the medical tent, witnessing the carnage going on inside, she skirted her way through, nearly tripping over a man on the ground. She found Daniel treating a man who lost his arm and was bleeding out, "Daniel!" She called, moving to stand beside him, "we haven't got enough room! Not to mention staff! It's one nurse to thirty men out there," Regina stated as she watched him close up a wound, carefully stitching the skin together.
"I know, it's a bloodbath."
"Have you seen the Captain?"
"Locksley? No."
"One of his men said they haven't seen him since they were going over the top," she stated, feeling the worry well up inside her, what if he hadn't come back? What if he were still out there and they simply left him.
"Go see if you can find him," Daniel ordered, "he must be around here somewhere, he's captain he would have accompanied his men here."
Regina nodded doing a sweep of the main medical tent before heading out to the secondary one. She looked at each and every man not seeing a familiar face in any of them, she was getting increasingly flustered as she walked into the dining area to see if he'd maybe ended up in there. "Has anyone seen the Captain?!" She called out, trying to yell above the hustle and pained cries, she just hoped that someone knew where he was.
"Which one?" A man with a checklist asked as he approached her.
"Locksley, Captain Locksley," she informed him as he scanned his eyes over the paper in his hand.
"Still hasn't been accounted for," he shook his head and she swallowed down the bile that rose into her throat, she felt sick, so, so sick. If he were dead it was her fault, she'd sent him back, she was the one who allowed him to return to the front, she could have allowed him to stay in the medical tent, kept him for observation, but she hadn't and now he was nowhere to be found.
Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted the medical team who ventured out onto no man's land grouping up at the exit of the camp. She ran to them tugging on one of their sleeves, "are you going back out there?" she asked nervously.
"Just about to madam, if you'll excuse us..."
"There's someone I need you to look for," she stated, tucking the strand of hair that had escaped her tightly secured bun back behind her ear. She wanted to go with them but she knew that she didn't have the jurisdiction, there was not a chance they would let her out on that battlefield and if she were honest with herself she didn't think that she would have the courage to go anyway.
She was exhausted, her body ached with fatigue yet she kept going, there were still dozens of patients waiting to be seen, mainly the ones who resided on the floor, she didn't know exactly how many of them had passed away, but she had seen too many dead bodies for her liking. They were lined up in neat rows along the muddy ground, their faces covered as they lay there waiting to be prepared for burial, she'd rather not dwell on the lives lost and instead focus on the ones saved, on the ones she was still saving.
With all the drama she had almost forgotten about her missing Captain, almost, she was still thinking about him and when she spotted a member of the medical response team entering the main tent she practically sprinted across the space, "sir? Did you find him? Captain Locksley?" The man simply looked at her as though she were a crazy person before storming past her to speak with the General Surgeon. She scrunched her nose up and headed out of the area, how even in this time of great suffering did people still find the need to show their misogynistic ways?
The rain had stopped failing and dawn was beginning to break on the horizon, she wiped the back of her hand over her forehead, she daren't even think about what she looked like in that moment. Her hair had fallen out of its tie and was messily sticking to the blood that had managed to get onto her face. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, she felt sick to her stomach and completely drained, she just needed a break, she hadn't slept in over twenty-four hours and her body was feeling the strain. If she was honest with herself she felt on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Shaking her head, she tried to snap herself out of it when she noticed the medical van speeding into camp, she reverted straight back into nurse mode and rushed towards it, watching as the response team opened the doors, "he's severely injured, been out there all night, we had to wait for the fog to set in so we could get to him." Her eyes widened as they fell to the man who was laying in the arms of someone else.
"Well, I must say you are a sight for sore eyes milady."
Regina smiled as she looked up at the other man, "Captain," she breathed in relief, as the team took the man off on a stretcher and he hopped out of the van, his clothes were soaked with blood and she immediately reached out for him, running her hands over him, "where are you hurt?!"
"It's nothing," he shook his head, his hands coming to her shoulders, stopping her from continuing to check him over and making her look him in the eyes, "most of it isn't mine."
She felt the tears welling up and wrapped her arms around him, burying her head against his shoulder, she hardly even knew him yet she had felt so completely helpless not knowing where he was, not knowing if he was alive or dead. His arms surrounded her in return, pulling her close to him, his fingers stroking her back and through her hair.
"May I say you look slightly more dishevelled than the last time we had the pleasure of meeting," he chuckled.
Regina pulled back, swiping at her eyes, "well, I think I can safely say the same goes for you also," she laughed, "you have no idea how worried I have been," she whispered, "you scared me so much, I thought…"
"I'm somewhat invincible milady," he grinned.
"I don't think you are against grenades and guns somehow," she sighed. How could he be so careless with his life? Didn't he know how precious it was and how the human body could only take so much injury before it shut down completely no matter how ready the inhibitor was to die. She saw him wince as he moved and narrowed her eyes at him, "come with me," she instructed.
"No, you have patients in a worse state than I, treat my men before you treat me. My wound will still be here for you when you've finished," he winked, "trust me, it's barely a scratch."
Regina nodded reluctantly, he was right and she knew it, but she hated to let him win, rolling her eyes she made him follow her, "we have no room in the medical tents, so I guess you can stay here, but don't get blood on my bed, even if you are a Captain," she warned playfully as they moved into the nurse's quarters. She knew she was supposed to put him in there, not really, but he was a Captain, what did they want her to do, lay him on the floor? "I cannot believe you failed to tell me your rank yesterday morning."
"Would it have made a difference?" he asked as he sat on the edge of her bed, "I have to say milady I didn't think I would be in your bed quite so soon."
She rose her eyebrows at his forward nature before letting out a little laugh and shaking her head, "I will return later to treat your scratch, I'll bring you some food, there is water in the jug on the cupboard there," she gestured to the side, "will you manage whilst I'm gone?"
"It will be difficult but I will cope," he winked.
Regina managed to tend to another five patients before she felt a sense that something was wrong, it was a low lying fear that laid in the bottom of her stomach. She took off her pinafore washed her hands before heading to the kitchens, she spotted the chef busy cooking something and cleared her throat, "excuse me? Is there..."
"What?" He turned around to look at her and her eyes widened at the tone of his voice.
"Sorry, I just..."
"Speak up girl!"
She cleared her throat, she wasn't easily intimidated but this man somehow managed to make her feel small. "I'm treating the Captain and he needs nourishment," she stated, hoping that he didn't ask any more of her than that.
"Looks as though the Captain isn't the only one," he murmured scooping some eggs onto a plate with some biscuits before thrusting it into her hands making her jump. "You better eat yourself before you're no use nor ornament."
"Thank you," she whispered as she turned to the door and hurried towards the nurse's quarters, she glanced around before pushing the door opened quietly, "Captain?" He didn't reply so she assumed that he was sleeping, she moved over to the bed being mindful of the squeaky floorboards.
She'd just placed the plate of food on the bedside table when she noticed the blood on the ground, dripping from the bed. Her eyes widened as she snapped into action, "Captain Locksley!" She shouted, not managing to wake him and seeing that the blood was seeping into the covers on her bed. She flung them off quickly and grasped the hem of his sodden shirt, nearly tearing it as she pulled it out of his trousers and up his chest, exposing a bullet wound that was oozing with blood, "you bloody great fool!" She screamed, ripping the bed sheet before pressing it against the wound, she checked his neck, finding a pulse but it was faint, too faint for her liking. "You aren't allowed to die; do you hear me!" She yelled before turning and running as fast as she could, "Daniel!" She screamed as she pushed open the flap to the medical tent, finding Daniel stood with a clipboard as he assessed someone. "Quick!" She grabbed his arm, yanking him harder than might have been necessary.
"Staff nurse Mills!" Blue bellowed from beside the doctor, "what on earth..."
"Would you bloody well shut your mouth, you stuck up witch," Regina spat, not caring about the consequences of speaking to her in such a manner. "Daniel hurry, please hurry!"
"What is it?" He asked, grabbing his medical bag and hurrying after her as they rushed back to the Captain, Regina flung the door open and pointed to the man.
"He's bleeding out! He told me he wasn't hurt badly but he's got a bullet wound, he's lost a lot of blood," she cringed. Standing to the side she watched as Daniel set to work, removing the bullet and stitching up the wound, she held onto his hand as she sat on the opposite side of the bed, assisting Daniel when he needed it. "Please stay with me," she whispered, resting her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes and praying to god that he would live, that he would be saved.
"I removed the bullet and stitched the wound, but like you said, Regina, he's lost a lot of blood, I need you to run to my office and find the regiment blood list and then find a bag of blood that matches his blood type, okay?"
Regina nodded violently and pressed a brief kiss to his shoulder as she ran out of the nurse's base, storming into Daniel's hut, seeing that Blue was there already, "nurse Mills."
"Not now Matron! I have a job to do and as far as I'm aware you do also. So give it a rest with your higher status and save people's lives like you're supposed to," Regina seethed as she rummaged through Daniel's file cabinet, finding Locksley's regiment list and running her finger down the listing before finding his and taking note of the blood type, once she had it memorised she unlocked the bloods cupboard with shaky hands, taking out the one that matched before locking it again and running back to Daniel.
"I have it!" She stated, handing it to him for him to hook up, she watched him work, admiring the skill it must take to be able to heal someone the way Daniel did, sure she could do the basics, but some of the things Daniel did were truly inspirational. When all the blood had been transferred into Robin, Daniel removed the tube and wrapped a bandage around the needle wound. "Is he…"
"Hopefully, his pulse seems to have stabilised somewhat, he's one lucky chap that's for sure," the surgeon quipped as he put all of his instruments back into his medical bag, "I'll help you move him so you can change the sheets, however I think this is the best place for him, there's no room in the medical tent and in here you can take care of him can you not?"
"Yes," she nodded as she assisted Daniel in moving him to the rug on the ground before hurriedly changing the sheets so they could move him back again.
"Well Mills, I better be getting back to it, in the meantime I want you to rest, you look half dead, your sister would have my head if she knew how much you have been doing."
Regina sighed watching him leave before turning to the Captain and moving over to him, she carefully removed his blood-soaked shirt before gently washing his chest, she wiped away all the dirt and grime to reveal the sun-kissed torso below. She swallowed nervously before covering him with the sheet and turning to grab some fresh clothes of her own from her chest. She opted to change into her nightdress and moved behind the screen so she could wash with the now lukewarm water; she knew her hair was probably disgusting but she didn't have the effort to wash it, she simply tied it up and pulled her nightdress over her head.
She walked out nervously not knowing where she should go, part of her wanted to climb into bed with him, but she felt that may be a little inappropriate considering they only just met that morning, yet she felt a deeper connection to him than that, situations like this one could bring people together faster than normal. Regina opted to pull the rocking chair over, she positioned it beside the bed and climbed onto it, tucking her feet underneath her and covering herself with a blanket. Her eyes fluttered closed and she reached out to hold onto his hand before drifting off into a much-needed sleep.
Regina was awoken by the feeling of fingers tracing over her hand, stroking her palm before turning it over and simply holding her hand. Her eyes fluttered open and met the blues of the man laid in bed staring up at her, a smile played on her features as she sat up, releasing a yawn, "finally awake milady."
"I thought I would never hear your voice again," she whispered, moving from the chair as he patted the bed beside him and she moved to sit there.
"I told you I'm…"
"You bloody well are not invincible Captain Locksley and you would do well to remember that in the future before you trying pulling a foolish stunt like that again."
"Robin."
"What?"
"My name is Robin, Captain Locksley sounds so formal, especially considering the things we have been through in the past twenty-four hours," he stated, "I also still think I could be invincible, I'm not dead, am I?" he grinned and she shook her head before burying her face against him.
"No, you're not dead, but you nearly were, how could you keep your injury from me like that? You told me that you were fine, that it was just a scratch, not that you had been shot and the bullet was still in you," she stated, feeling almost on the brink of tears once more, she wished that he wouldn't joke about things like that, because they certainly weren't funny, he had risked his life, and for what? What did he really have to gain from sending her away and not letting her treat him when he was hurt?
"So, your name is?"
"Did you not hear what I just said?"
"Yes, I did and I want to know your name so that I can thank the beautiful nurse in person for saving my life twice."
"Twice? I hardly think you can call patching your eye up this morning saving your life," she scoffed.
"No, but when I was on that battlefield lying in the cold, damp mud with that young private, I thought that all hope was lost, I was so close to giving in, and I think I would have done had I not had something to think about," he smirked, one of his hands coming to cup her cheek, "you saved my life twice nurse Mills, the least I owe you is a proper thank you and for that I need your first name."
She smiled at him and nuzzled her face against his hand, "Regina, my name is Regina."
"Well thank you, Regina, for saving my life," he stated, she felt herself getting lost in his eyes as she moved closer to him, briefly glancing down at his lips, "so, how can I repay the debt I owe you?"
She bit down on her bottom lip and let out a little chuckle, "maybe you could give me something to think about of my own," she quipped boldly.
"Gladly," he agreed, closing the gap between them and pressing his lips tenderly against hers, his fingers slipping from her cheek to the back of her neck, sliding into her hair. She kissed him back as her hand rested gently on his chest, she daren't move them any further than that for fear of accidentally knocking his injury.
When they had to break for air Regina rested her forehead against his, her eyes still closed as she basked in the way he stroked her hair.
"If I get out of this war alive…"
"Robin…" she opened her eyes and cast him a sharp look as she began to protest only to be cut off by him.
"If I get out of this war alive, I would like to court you staff nurse Regina Mills."
She chuckled and shook her head. It would be so nice to have someone, she'd never really been in a relationship, never had a man and Robin was the most endearing one she had ever met, if she were honest with herself, she was somewhat head over heels for him already. "I would love nothing more than to be courted by you Robin Locksley, but you aren't going to die, you're invincible remember."
"Oh yeah," he grinned bopping his nose against hers playfully, "but as much as I might joke about that, it's carnage out there."
"You will come back to me," she whispered, allowing her lips to trace over his, "I know it. I'm so tired."
"Go to sleep," he breathed, "I'll be right here. Sorry for taking up your bed, you must be exhausted."
"I don't mind you taking up my bed," she giggled before closing her eyes, "I feel as though I could sleep for days," she laid her head down on his chest, listening to his heart beat steadily. She was just ready for the end of the fucking war so that she could finally live her life and hopefully, Robin would be a part of that, she just hoped to god that she still had him by the end of it.
