I'd planned something romantic. I wore lingerie. But I'm already asleep when Josh gets home that night, I realize when the soft light emanating from the hall gently rouses me awake.
"Josh," I whisper, seeing the silhouette of his frame appear in the doorway.
"Go back to sleep, Donnatella," he murmurs back to me as he climbs into bed, planting a warm kiss on my shoulder.
"Josh," I whisper again, rolling over to face him and seeing, now that my eyes have adjusted, that he ditched only the jacket and shoes, and has climbed into bed almost entirely in his work clothes.
"What is it?" he asks me, his face etched with the lines only years of near-constant concern for his loved ones can create.
"I'm pregnant," I tell him, my voice still gravelly from sleep.
"What?" He asks me, gently, in disbelief.
"You need to take off your tie," I tell him tiredly. "You'll choke yourself to death in your sleep," I admonish him, tugging at the knot I had tied this morning. Josh rolls away from me, moving to turn on a light. "Ow, Josh," I admonish him again, rubbing at my eyes.
"Sorry," he apologizes immediately, moving to cup my cheek with his hand. "You're pregnant?" he asks, softly, as if speaking it aloud might make it untrue.
"Yeah," I confirm, smiling. "I promised myself I'd tell you in our next quiet moment together. I just didn't expect it to be at 2 o'clock in the morning."
"Sorry," he tells me again, and I know he means it, even though it isn't his fault. "I was in the sit room all night."
"Is everything okay?" I ask, even though I know he wouldn't be able to tell me if it wasn't.
"Yeah," he tells me. "A false alarm off the coast of Cuba." he informs me distractedly as he slowly draws his knuckles across my still-soft stomach.
"Josh," I whisper again.
"Yeah," he says, not a question.
"Are you.. How are you feeling?" I ask.
"Donna, I'm the luckiest man in the whole world." He tells me.
"Josh," I warn, fearing that he's not telling me the whole truth.
"Donnatella, I mean it. I thought I was the luckiest man in the world when I married you, and I was, but you just broke my record. You, me, and a baby? What could be better than that?"
"If the Republicans let that education bill through the house?" I offer, teasing him now, and he chuckles.
"Not even that. Donna. I am so, so happy. Thank you," He says, kissing me before rolling over to take off his tie and shirt.
"You were just as active a participant in this as I was," I remind him, smiling.
"I know, Donna, but I don't thank you near enough for everything you've done in the decade and a half we've known each other. So thank you for all of it," he says, slipping back into bed and under the covers, his arms reaching for me. "What's this?" He asked, seeing my outfit for the first time once he lifted the covers.
"I had plans," I inform him, rolling over to face him and stretching out languorously before wrapping my arms around his neck.
"Well, plans were made to be revisited," He smiled, kissing my neck before rolling us both over.
