It wasn't fair. Life was never fair, of course, but this was especially unfair. Django didn't know how the immortals did it. The hunger, the constant longing, the downright pain of it all…sometimes Django felt like he couldn't keep going.
It was especially difficult in San Miguel. All of the living people there just served as temptation. Honestly, Django preferred going out and killing immortals to staying in the city. He liked the company, but eventually it would drive him crazy. Like right now, how he had to bite down on his lip to keep himself from either doing something stupid or fleeing the room.
His companions were oblivious to the torment he went through. Right now, Zazie and Lita were having a pleasant discussion, and Django had to keep all his attention focused on not eating them. As each moment passed, though, that task became increasingly difficult. Every so often the girls would tilt their heads back as they laughed, exposing their soft, delicious necks….
No! Django shook his head roughly. He had to stop thinking about that. Lita and Zazie are not food. He repeated that to himself several times, but it only helped a little bit. He was hungry, very hungry. Even the mice in the alleys sounded delicious right now.
Django reached up and ran his hand down his neck, pausing when he felt the two small pinpricks near the base. That was the cause of all his torments. Because he had been careless once, Django had to deal with these cravings every day of his life. Of course, he could never give in to them. He was the solar boy, destined to kill all immortals. He couldn't go around eating the people he was supposed to save!
That's right. He was the protector of the people. He had to slay all the immortals and purify their remains so that they could never return. He had to make sure that nobody else would become a meal. He had to make sure that nobody faced the same pain he did every day. Every immortal had to die by his hands. Every immortal…including himself.
Django sighed. He didn't know if he could actually take his own life, but he would find out eventually. After all, there were only so many immortals in the world. He had to wait until he got the other ones, but eventually his time would come. Never again…that's the thought that kept him going. Once he and all the immortals were gone, nobody would die in such a painful way ever again.
