okay, i wrote this half-delirious, but take it for what it is, and keep an open mind please.

Things Between Us...

We sat on the top bunk at camp, the one pushed to the furthest corner of the room. The other guests were oblivious to our little corner of the world, they went about their business.

We were just talking... until he found a deck of cards and then we were playing a hard-core game of go-fish.

"No way," he accused me, "you've got to have a nine."

I shook my head slowly, still staring at my cards. In the end, though, I cracked a smile, he always made me smile.

I placed a nine in his outstretched hand and his fingers closed around it, trapping my hand as well.

I tried to subtly pull my hand away, but his grip was strong. The joking atmosphere was gone, and so was the game. Only now, did I desperately want it back.

"Hey now," I said with a forced smile, "you only get the nine."

"Cut it out I want to talk."

"Let's talk, then," I responded coldly.

"What did he do?" He cut straight to the heart of the problem, just as he always did.

"Who?" I feigned innocence.

"Please, I don't want this between us. Just tell me..."

"I.. It doesn't matter."

"Yes, it does. Or it wouldn't be bothering you," he whispered softly. "I see the look in your eyes when hes mentioned, even when you try to hide it. Just tell me..."

"No," I mumbled, "You won't care."

"Of course I will!" he said a bit louder, defensively, but his voice softened as he asked his next question.

"Did he hurt you?"

I cast my gaze down, unable to look him in the eye any longer as the memories surfaced and I bit back tears.

He seemed lost for words as he released my hand, dropping the card. "I..." he searched for words, as he finally had his answer and couldn't process it.

I flicked my eyes to his, refusing to show weakness, even now.

"I'd never hurt you..." He placed both hands on my shoulders as he said this.

I felt him lean in, I felt his forehead press against mine lightly, and I felt my heart thump wildly.

I moved only my eyes up to look at him and found him searching my face for something. After a moment he gave up searching and brought his lips to mine.

Because finally, there was nothing between us.
