The Blackout

Everything went pitch black.

Everything I knew about the world disappeared, like sand cupped in my hands, slipping through my fingers.

I slowly felt my way around the house, searching around every obstacle to get to the kitchen.

I last saw my mum there, only I hoped she was still in the same room.

"Mummy?!" I called out. My Daddy was at work tonight, so I to knew to call out to Mum.

"I'm in here, it's just a blackout honey. Follow my voice."

I gently ran my fingertips over the lounge, gradually shuffling around the big, comfy block of foam and wood.

Something gently grasped my searching fingers, my throat choked out a panicked shriek.

"It's okay darling, it's me, now we have to find a torch and get your brother." My mum said in a soothing voice.

I heard my Mummy's careful footsteps but her hand never left mine. She stopped moving and I heard a click.

A bright beam of light pierced the blackness, making our house look eerie and scary. A wash of relief flooded through me as I saw something other than just black before my eyes.

"Josh, where are you?!" My mother yelled a little panicked now. My brother was younger than I was, around 5 and if I was scared I couldn't imagine how terrified Josh would be.

"Mummy is that you? I'm scared" A timid little voice responded.

"Yes, where are you honey?" My Mum repeated.

"I'm in my bedroom." Josh's voice shook.

Mummy and I found him curled up on his bed, his little face plastered in fear.

"Oh sweetheart, are you okay? Were here now." Mum exclaimed as she saw his state.

We hurried over, sat on the bed and shared a group hug.

I felt so safe there with my family, even though I wished Daddy was here with us.

Who'd ever thought you would feel safe and secure in a scary 'Blackout', but strangely and surprisingly enough, I did.
