Mommy Doesn't Look Dead
I love my mommy
But mommy didn't love herself
She tried and tried
But she just couldn't
She didn't look dead when I saw her
I think she tried not to
When me and my aunt found her
Aunt Willow said the blood was strawberry jam
"She died with strawberry gashes all over"
She said
Then she cried and cried and cried
And she didn't stop for days and days
Aunt Willow was mommy's best friend
Mommy didn't look dead
Her make-up was perfect
And her skin was all perfect
(Except for her arms)
Her pretty eyes were open too
And she wore her favorite dress
Mine too
It was dark green
And it went past the knee
With the boots she liked
I did too
Mommy didn't look dead
When I saw her the night before
She looked sad maybe
But her eyes were still bright
Now they're empty
And Aunt Willow said they wouldn't be light
Like they used to be
She said she'd never leave me
Like daddy left her
But mommy didn't look dead
At least not the way my books say
Her body is still here
And she still has all her skin
No bones show
Except for her ribs
But there is skin over them
Mommy didn't look dead
When they put her in that box
Sleek and dark and beautiful
Just like my mommy
All her friends
Talked all about her
Her smile and laugh and beauty
And how she could always cheer someone up
Even if she couldn't cheer herself up
Aunt Dawn was there too
She doesn't look like mommy
And the last time they spoke
Mommy was angry
Aunt Dawn was too
I never saw mommy mad before that
She didn't like to yell
She said it hurt her
And mommy didn't look dead then
Just like she doesn't now
As we walk follow my godfathers
They walk with her box
Up and down the street
And I don't know why
Everywhere I see
They're people crying
All of mommy's friends
But mommy didn't look dead!
And she couldn't be
She'll come back tomorrow
And open up her arms
She'll say what she always does
"Mama's home baby girl."
And I'll run to her
And give her a great big hug
And it'll be like it should be
Because mommy doesn't look dead
But they lower her into the wet ground
I yell and try to jump after her
But Uncle Xander holds me back
So I bite him
And yell at mommy's box
"Come back!" I say
"I'll be the best little girl
I'll brush your hair like you brush mine
I'll get good grades
I won't watch any TV!"
But the box didn't move
And mommy didn't come back
And I fell and faded
Like Casper the ghost
Mommy and me's favorite movie
Oh
Mommy,mommy,mommy
But you didn't look dead!
