Special Agent Marcus Pike stepped off the elevator and surveyed the floor. Ten months had passed since he was last here, having spent the majority of it undercover.
Trying to forget.
The layout was slightly different, but he recognised Agent Wylie seated at his desk with the ever present earpiece. His eyes then shifted to find the familiar form of Special Agent Teresa Lisbon, the back of her at least, as she stood leaning over her desk, phone in hand.
Stepping closer, he heard her wrap up the call and turn around. Words died on his lips as her eyes met his.
"Marcus..."
He barely heard her.
His eyes were instantly drawn to the evidence that she was several months pregnant, and a second later he saw the solitaire diamond ring adorning the hand that rested on her belly protectively.
It took him several long moments to realise that he was staring and with considerable effort raised his eyes to the face of the woman he had once hoped to call his.
"Ah..." He swallowed with difficulty. "Congratulations."
He saw the tension leave her shoulders as a smile blossomed. "Thank you."
"So, uh, where's Jane?"
"He's renovating our house, well, shack really."
"Jane?!" He raised his eyebrows in surprise at the thought of the consultant doing manual labour.
"Yeah." His heart clenched at the soft loving look that adorned her features as she unconsciously rubbed her swollen abdomen.
"I'm happy for you Teresa."
His heart broke all over again when she stepped in and angled her body to give him a quick hug.
There was nothing more to be said and so after a few minutes of awkward conversation, he made to leave.
He had thought he had given his broken heart time to heal, but as the elevator doors shut on Teresa Lisbon for the last time, he knew he'd been wrong.
Finito.
