Wally was floating, yet he felt like he was also touching the ground. Darkness surrounded him, engulfed him in the shadows. It was drowning him. So this is death. Not exactly what I was expecting. Wally tried to open his eyes. The most he got was a small twitch before he gave up, it was pointless to try. Wally felt like he was numb and on fire at the same time, all while his soul filled with icy frost. His eyes still did not open.
How long he was like this he had no clue, but the feeling of fire in his lungs made it drag on for eternity. Trying to breathe was like taking a breath underwater, it just filled him with more pain. Wally wanted so badly to open his eyes, to see light, if there even was any in the land of the dead. He felt like he was underwater, like water was sinking into his skin and turning his veins to ice. If this was the feeling of being dead, Wally was in for an eternity of pain.
Wally felt something, an emotion that he hadn't felt in a while. White hot rage seeped into his cold mind. He felt anger, anger at the world for letting him die. Angry at the Justice League for not being there to help him, for missing the last Chrysalis. Anger at himself for never telling Dick, his Robin, goodbye. He wished he told him how much he loved the younger boy just one more time. But, as soon as the rage came, it was gone. Something wet rolled down his cheek. H-He was crying. How was that possible? He shouldn't be able to cry if he was dead. He would have no physical body for the tears to come from.
Then he remembered something that his uncle told him long ago. "When a speedster dies, our bodies become part of the very thing that gives us our powers. We ascend to the Speed Force, not to whatever afterlife there is for other humans. It is an endless cycle." Thats when he realized, he wasn't dead! There was not Speed Force energy around him, he couldn't sense it like he should be able to if he were in the heart of his lightning.
Wally tried again to regain consciousness. Desperately, the speedster tried to force open his eyes. Come on. Come on! Please! Let me see the light again. Don't leave me in the dark forever. He felt his eyes twitch for a while before they cracked open and allowed the barest trace of sunlight to shine. The sudden brightness blinded him and he shut his eyes immediately. It took a few minutes for his eyes to adjust to the harsh rays of the Sun. The speedster looked around. He was in a forest? That's odd, even for me. I could have sworn I was in Antarctica.
When Wally looked to the sky, he suddenly realized why it was so bright, there were three Sun's in the blue ocean above him. His stomach dropped. Why are there three Suns? What happened? And Where the hell am I? Thats when it hit him. He wasn't on Earth, he wasn't even in the same Solar System. His mind was racing at a thousand miles per hour, which, in all fairness wasn't really unusual for him. But that's not the point! He wasn't on Earth. Why wasn't he on Earth!?
His surroundings consisted of tall trees that stretched to a dark blue sky, and little undergrowth. Even though much of the Suns light reached the forest floor. Wally thought that it was illogical, at least by Earthen standards. He could faintly hear the sounds of various animals. Squeaks, neighs, cries and chirps filled his ears. The noise sounded much like Earth's animals, but their were notable differences in pitch and tone. Wally's stomach growled and he grabbed the nearest patch of berries on a bush before shoving them into his mouth.
Now, I know you must be thinking that he's crazy for not checking to see if it was safe to eat first, but with a speedsters metabolism, Wally knew that he would most likely be fine. If this affects me negatively because it's toxic, than it's enough poison to kill at least forty fully grown blue whales. The hero had never encountered a food, no matter how toxic, that he couldn't eat and be fine after. With his hunger satisfied, Wally began to search for a source of clean water, or another liquid that he could drink, like fruit juice. The speedster also kept a keen eye out for any signs of intellectual life.
So far though, Wally doubted the possibility of sentient beings. Hal had once told him that out of millions of habitable planets in thousands of star systems, very few had intellectual life. Most planets were home to wild beasts that were more than capable of killing due to the lack of rational and conscious predators. The Green Lantern also told him that sometimes during wars, people would find the most vicious and deadly creatures on planets without sentient life, so that they could be sold and trained for combat and released on the enemy.
Finally, Wally spotted a large clearing with a clear blue river running through it. The speedster almost cried in relief that there was water on this planet. Wally looked up, the suns seemed to be disappearing. Well, now's as good a time to set up camp as any. So set up camp Wally did. Using leaves, large branches and tree sap, Wally made a small roof in over his head and a bed made of soft moss and some flower petals. I now appreciate every wilderness survival class and training exercise I have ever done. It wasn't the best, but it was only temporary, at least until morning when he could improve his home. Wally sighed, he could be here a while, scratch that, he could be here his whole life.
A tear slid down his pale face. He may never see Dick again, his little Robin. Well, he was Nightwing now, but to Wally he would always be the small little kid who butchered the English language and hacked classified files and almost got the Team in more trouble than he has, and that last part was saying something. He would always be the man he fell in love with. Sure Dick changed over the years, but so did Wally, and they each loved each other for each other, and nothing could ever change that. Even when Wally went undercover in the Light as the assassin Serpent after Kid Flash was 'killed' by Aqualad.* Wally never told anyone that he had killed during his time with the Light. One life to save millions, he had told himself when he slit the poor man's throat and watched the life leave his pale blue eyes. That murder was still unsolved.
A cold wind blew in, causing Wally to shiver and huddle closer in on himself. He gripped two stones and started a small fire under his hut. It was well controlled and not a risk to his safety. Thank you again wilderness survival classes. What ever would I do without you. Wally wasn't as cold as he should have been in the freezing night. A speedster had a higher body temperature than an average human, which is why Wally hated hotter places. He didn't like the cold much, to much could mess with his powers, but he would rather have that than blazing heat.
Wally shivered again and cuddled under the large leaves he gathered. The Justice League will find me, they will know that I'm alive. They wouldn't leave me here, Right? Wally's thoughts became more pessimistic. What if they think I'm dead? What if Dick doesn't care that I'm gone? What if he never loved me in the first place? The anger Wally felt earlier returned full force and made him shake with rage. He wanted to hurt, to take vengeance. Like last time, it was gone before he could make sense of it. Wally though that it was best to ignore the anger, it would fade. Soon, the speedster was able to drift into an uneasy sleep. Dreams filled his mind. Dreams of a raven haired boy with chilling blue eyes that held all of his warmth.
Location: The Watchtower
Time: 2:48 am
A man with raven hair sat in the gardens of the space station known as the Watchtower. He was looking through the windows and out towards the stars. He felt a small pull, a slight tug, telling him to go beyond his planet, beyond his Star System. The man shook the feeling away. He shouldn't be wanting to leave, he should be here, with his friends and family. But, it was hard to think about his family without thinking of a ginger haired and green eyes speedster.
Nightwing let out a long sigh. His eyes began to cloud with salty water. Why did Wally have to go? Why did his light fade away? A lone tear slid down his cheek, then another, and another. Soon he was openly sobbing, his eyes shut and figure trembling. Wally was so young, so full of life. He should be here, next to him, telling bad jokes that somehow make him smile. Wally should be alive. If anyone deserves to live long and happy, it's Wally. He was the type of person who never gave up, the kind of guy who you couldn't help but like. He was the person who reminded you that after every hurricane there is a rainbow, and that night is always darkest just before the bright dawn.
Dick opened his eyes, filled with tears and grief. "Wally," He choked out, "Why did you leave me? Why did you have to go?" Suddenly there was a hand on is shoulder. He looked up, expecting to see Batman, or the Flash, or even Hal Jorden, who saw Wally as his nephew and was devastated over the loss. Instead, he saw the face of Bart Allen, the new Kid Flash. Nightwing didn't know why he did it, maybe it was because they looked so much alike, or the fact that Bart felt Wally's loss as much as he did, but Dick turned around in a flash and embraced the speedster in a tight hug, tears once again streaming down his face.
Bart returned the embrace, also crying at the loss of his cousin. "It's not fair," Bart said as he cries into Nightwing's chest. "No. No it's not," Dick said in a mournful tone. How long they stood there was a mystery, but the two embraced the comfort that the other gave them. Wally was an angel among men, his spirit was enough to make even Batman smile. But now, he's gone. Nightwing swore silently to himself that he would never let a friend die again. He would give up his own life before he would ever allow one of his own brothers and sisters in everything but blood get hurt.
* In this story, Wally went undercover in the Light as Serpent instead of Artemis as Tigress. Kaldur and Dick helped fake Wally's death not Artemis'. Artemis did still change her costume and name after Wally died though.
Well, that's the first chapter. Please comment how you feel about the story and give me some suggestions for how you want the story to go from here. Based on the summery and story so far though, you can probably tell were this is going to inevitably end up going already. Comment your ideas and if I end up using them you will be credited.
