The Interlude – Part I

Ok. So I did it. I got up the nerve, found the guts, realized I had the balls to do what I had wanted to do for seven years. Ok, so I meant to kiss her on the cheek. Who knew fate would step in to lend me a hand? She was smiling, which was uncommon and yet blessedly welcome after what she had just witnessed. I guess seeing Frank Black reunited with his daughter had put the smile on her face. I didn't care how it got there I just wanted it to stay put.

We were standing in that hospital waiting area watching the ball drop in New York, listening to the count down, and when it had finally reached one I had glanced over and seen her smiling at the kissing couple on television and I was inspired to try the same. I had leaned over to peck her on the cheek but she had sensed the change in air pressure between us or just knew I was somehow closer than I had been seconds before so she had tilted her head and BAM! our lips met.

I was stunned to say the least. I almost pulled back, a little embarrassed and hoping I wasn't going to get a left hook this time. Then I realized she wasn't protesting. In fact, she was reciprocating. It seemed to last forever but it was only seconds. A little longer than a friendly kiss and we both knew it. When we finally pulled back, she had that secret little smile on her face and I knew I was grinning like an idiot.

"The world didn't end," I pointed out. She ducked her head shyly.

"No, it didn't." I would have gone in again but she turned away. I sighed.

"Happy New Year, Scully." She paused and seemed a little sad, like she knew the moment had now passed and we could never get it back. We had shared out first kiss. No more waiting, no more tension, it had happened and no matter how sweet or wonderful it had been it would never be the first time again.

"Happy New Year, Mulder." Then, to put her at ease, I had slung my arm over her shoulders and escorted her out of the hospital.

So it had been perfect, well perfect would have been if she had tried to stick her tongue in my mouth, which I wouldn't have protested in the least, and we'd wound up doing it against the hospital wall, audience be damned. That would have been perfect. Ok, that would have been totally inconceivable, but I have my fantasies. Boy, do I ever. Especially now that I know what her lips feel like on mine. Now that I've had a taste of Essence of Scully. Nope, there is no going back for me boys. I've had a glimpse of paradise and I want more. Much more. For the rest of my life more. Yeah, I know, it scares me too.
