NO SOUP FOR YOU?

By: Vanessa Sgroi

"Why did we have to come here?" whined Dean, glaring around at the interior of the little Souper Store restaurant.

"Because it's cold outside, Dean, and a big bowl of hot soup sounded good to me. You said I could pick the place."

Dean glowered at his brother and then back down at his menu. "Yeah, well, soup is not a meal. It's barely an appetizer. A cheeseburger and fries—now that's a meal!"

"Well suck it up 'cause we're here...and the waitress is heading this way."

The waitress arrived and sat a big basket of warm bread on the table. "Howdy, y'all boys...welcome to the Souper Store. What can I get you?"

Sam smiled at her. "I'll have a bowl of Clam Chowder."

She nodded then looked at Dean expectantly. "And you, hun?"

"Uh...I dunno...I'm not a soup person. What's good?"

"Well, the Cabbage Roll Soup, Stuffed Pepper Soup, Broccoli Cheddar and Cream of Mushroom are good..."

She paused as Dean turned up his nose. She winked. "But if you ask me today's special—the Bacon Cheeseburger Soup—is one of our best."

Dean's eyes lit up. "I'll have that. Uhhh...with some extra onions?"

"Good deal. Let me know when you'd like more bread. Oh, and don't forget there's free refills on the soup."

When she was gone, Dean looked at Sam and frowned. "How can you eat Clam Chowder." He shuddered for effect. "It's...it's like you're eating rubber bands."

"Says you. I happen to love it."

When their food came, Dean slowly lowered his spoon into his soup. When he lifted it, he made sure to snag a few squares of diced onion on the way. He took a tentative bite. His eyes widened in surprise. "Sam," he declared reverently, "it tastes exactly like a cheeseburger. Just without the bun." He hurriedly buttered a piece of bread, dipped it in the soup, and took a bite. He moaned. "This is fantastic!"

"So, soup CAN be a meal, right?" responded Sam around a bite of his own soup.

Dean shoveled in another big spoonful. "Gotta learn how to make this. Think it's hard?"

"I don't have a clue." Sam motioned to their waitress that they needed more bread and soup.

Four bowls of soup and three baskets of bread later, Dean sat back and patted his belly. "Man, that was good stuff." He watched Sam finish off his bowl. "Now I wish they had some pie."

Sam pushed his empty bowl aside. "No pie, but they do have some dessert soups."

"Dessert soup?"

"Sure." Sam grabbed the little card off the table. They have...uhhh...Strawberry, Cherry Vanilla, Raspberry, Chocolate Mint, and Apple Pie."

That got Dean's attention.

The waitress came to clear their table. "Sure do love fellas with big appetites. Y'all want dessert?"

The brothers nodded. Sam chose the Chocolate Mint and Dean, of course, the Apple Pie.

Dean's first bite was bliss. "I'm in Heaven. Like Food Heaven, I mean..."
