Disclaimer: I own neither Safe and Sound nor the Warriors series. The credit for those go to the wonderful Taylor Swift and Erin Hunter. I only own this story, and I am not making any profit from this.
I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said, "I'll never let you go"
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said, "Don't leave me here alone"
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight
The war seemed like it would last forever.
Rainkit didn't know how long it had been going on. For as long as she could remember, really.
She remembered the tears that her mother cried when Rainkit's sister, Lightkit, had disappeared from the nursery. Rainkit didn't understand why. Until they brought her sister back.
"Please stay." She whispered to their mother, her light green eyes half open, blood coating her light colored pelt. "Don't leave me alone."
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound
"Just close your eyes." Her mother had whispered softly, more tears threatening to fall. "You'll be okay."
Lightkit nodded her tiny head slightly, and obeyed. Her eyes shut and soon she was still.
"No one can hurt you now," Silversong had whispered, burying her nose in her daughter's fur.
Daylight crept into the nursery at last and a warrior came and took Lightkit away.
Don't you dare look out your window darling
Everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps ragin' on
Hold on to this lullaby
Even when the music's gone
Gone
"Stay here," Silversong commanded as she stood to follow. "Don't leave the nursery."
"Why not?" Rainkit squeaked, stumbling to her feet. "Where are they taking Lightkit? Can I come too?"
Silversong sighed. "You can't come because it's dangerous." She answered softly. "There's a war going on. It killed Lightkit." The queen's paused, regaining her composure. "But remember her." Suddenly she was begging, pleading with her young daughter. "Remember you sister. Hold tightly onto her memory and never let go!"
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound
And Rainkit did hang onto it. Even seasons later, when she was Rainwhisper, medicine cat of ThunderClan. She remembered the day her sister died. She remembered what killed her. And she made a promise to herself.
She was going to keep them safe. All of the defenseless kits, no matter where they came from. They wouldn't have to worry about if they would see the next day or not. As long as she was around no one would hurt them. Not in her clan.
That promise was put to the test when three kits, only about two and a half-moons old, were brought into camp.
"We found them in the forest." Eagleclaw, the deputy, explained when he brought them into the medicine cat's den. "Ravenstar wanted you to look after them for now."
Rainwhisper nodded, already examining the kits. One had a gash on the side of its head, and another a scratch on its back, but otherwise they were fine.
Just close your eyes
You'll be alright
Come morning light,
You and I'll be safe and sound...
At last she had them cleaned up and got them to sleep.
"You'll be okay now." She whispered, watching them from her nest. "I promise." She remembered her mother's words to her sister.
No one can hurt you now…
"Safe and sound…" Rainwhisper murmured, closing her eyes. She knew these kits would see tomorrow. "You're all safe and sound now…"
