"Five Months, Three Weeks, Six Days"
It's been exactly five months, three weeks, six days and five hours since he made the deal to bring Sammy back. He knows, because he's been counting. Knows exactly how long he's got left now, how much more time he has to spend with his brother before it's all used up. He's counted down to the minute how much of that time he'd spend hunting, and how many nights he's gonna spend in crappy-ass motels while his kid brother searches for 'the answer'. He also knows that Sammy won't find it, not in any of those books Bobby gave him, and not in time, anyway.
He's as good as gone, but he's okay with that because Sammy isn't going anywhere.
He's made peace with his death, doesn't care if he faces it alone—thinks he'd rather go alone and unnoticed, the same way they'd spent most of their lives. It's better for Sam that way, anyhow.
He's devised a plan in his head, what's gonna happen when he's gone, even stops to think what's going to happen to the Impala. He'll leave it for Sam, because if the kid's lucky, she's still got a few years of life left in her, maybe more if he takes care of her right. Sam'll go and find Bobby, they'll join up and save the world, just like they'd always planned to, except this time 'round, Dean wouldn't be there to help.
Sam would have to be extra careful, because, no offense to Bobby, he's getting on in years, and isn't as quick on his feet as he should be. Dean noticed that five months, six weeks and three days ago, right before they opened Hell's doors up. But Sam would be okay, he had to be okay, because Dean isn't sure how he'd bring him back a second time, and there's no way in Hell (no pun intended) that he is going to let him die again.
No. Way. In. Hell.
Because it's been exactly five months, three weeks, six days and five hours since he made that deal, and he's not going to watch his brother die again when he's not there to save him.
