Sunset on the Lake

It was a normal day.

The sun shone brightly, its golden rays reflecting off the waters of Lake Hylia, making its surface shine. The rays slanted onto the colourful roof of Fyer's hut, off the pearly white of the Isle of Riches and the deep green of the grass on the islands.

Higher up, a young man was riding his horse towards the Great Bridge of Hylia. He was heading south from Castle Town. The sun, which would set in about an hour, was on his right. The man, Link wheeled his horse, Epona to the left of the bridge's entrance; where there was a small house overlooking the lake.

"Stay here, girl. Or, if you want, go back to Castle Town. You can rest in the guardhouse," he said as he dismounted. She whinnied in reply. Link entered the house, and his horse went back to the city.

"Flight down to the lake?" the tall man inside the house, whose name was Falbi, asked.

"Yes. Got change?" Link asked, holding out a silver rupee. Falbi took it and gave him back four jewels: one orange, one purple, one red and one yellow.

Link picked up one of the Cuccos that were in the house and walked to the platform Falbi was standing on. He jumped off, towards the lake. The Cucco squawked and flapped frantically to keep them airborne. Link guided it to the opposite bank of the lake. He jumped off the Cucco and grabbed hold of a metal spire that protruded from the rock cliff.

Link sat on the metal bar, looking at the figurehead carved into it and admiring the beauty of the lake below. His thoughts were interrupted by a faint green light above him.

Princess Zelda, regal as ever, landed beside him.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.

"I could ask you the same," he said with a smile, then continued. "It's beautiful here when the sun sets."

They sat in silence and watched first the desert, with the Bulblins riding across it, and the great prison at its far corner with the four wind vanes rotating. When the light began to fade they turned the other way and watched the sun set over Hyrule Field.

Birds flew across the colour-filled sky. Death Mountain glowed in the orange light. Link thought he could see shapes moving down the slope, but that was probably just his imagination.

The ruler and the protector of Hyrule sat together and gazed at the beauty of their land. It was truly a sight.

It was a normal day. A beautiful one.
