He would never forget the feeling of relief that washed over him when he saw her before them, knelt in peaceful prayer. Without a second thought, he leapt across the pillars, not caring that he could easily lose his footing and fall into the crystal waters below. All he cared about was stepping on that platform and letting her know everything was okay now.
He would never forget the way his body jerked and his mind went blank as Sephiroth took over my body. Slowly, he made his puppet walk forward, taking delight in the fact that the blonde could do nothing to stop him. His command was clear and harsh, stating that disobediance was not an option.
He would never forget the way his sword rose above his head as the beautiful flower girl knelt before him, blissfully unaware of what he was about to do. His eyes were blank, his face emotionless as he angled the blade, prepared to strike.
He would never forget how his friends had cried out, begging him to snap out of his trance. He did and his hands lost their grip, the sword falling to the ground with a loud clatter. He yelled to the heavens, demanding why he had been used in such a way before he looked back at the Cetra.
He would never forget the way her eyes fluttered open at the sound of his voice, or the small smile that she directed at him. He sucked in a breath, using his eyes to plead for her forgivness as she stared deeply into his beautiful blue gaze.
He would never forget the shadow that fluttered over her form, giving him but a second to look up and see the silver-haired man descend before plunging his sword into the flower girl's back, the blade cutting straight through her body, appearing out of her stomach.
He would never forget the way he jerked the weapon out of her, causing her body to fall forward. Her materia bounced across the platform before disappearing into the water and her broken ribbon lay on the floor where she had been kneeling.
He would never forget the way her eyes focussed on him as she took her last breath, her body jerking and shaking with the blood loss and he could do nothing but hold her until she finally went limp.
He would never forget how he had picked her fragile body up and walked out of the Forgotten Capital to the large lake that surrounded the city. He walked through the waters, holding her close to him as if protecting her. But it was too late to protect her. He was too late.
He would never forget how he placed her on the surface of the liquid, his hands holding her to stop her from leaving. He closed his eyes and gave a silent prayer to the Planet to protect her in the Promised Land and he asked to be forgiven for letting their last guardian be murdered.
He would never forget that moment where he finally let her go, watching her body gently sink to the bottom of the waters, her spirit far away from the world of despair and suffering but also far from him.
To Cloud Strife and the rest of Avalanche, Aeris Gainsborough was always remembered through a simple act of a pink ribbon tied around their arms.
To the rest of the world, she lay forgotten at the bottom of the Forgotten City's lake.
