They started playing tag, he an McNally. She started "it", but tagged him too soon. He was still angry, his pride too wounded, and didn't get into it. He warmed up pretty fast though, and tried to tag her back after their first day. But no luck. She was already retreating. The gal knew how to run fast.
Sometime in the middle of their first round, the cool kid of the block had come over their park and started throwing balls her way, had distracted her from their game. By the time he caught up, she was playing catch without him. He threw some volleys at her too, but dodge seemed to be the name of their game, and it was a mean and fast one.
Luke dropped the ball sometimes. He got a memorable stint as sub, but boy, did Andy throw him a curve that night. Stopped participating till the dress up game. He thought he had won that one, till Andy and Luke started playing house. He sat out of that one.
All was quiet till Luke decided to play a bit of hide and seek on the side with an old friend.
He wondered, while mock boxing, both laughing, if she was ready to come out and play again.
