2001 Maniacs: South Risin

Chapter 1: Soldiers Up Yonder

Rufus Buckman excitedly charged toward his house to wake his father as the sun was barely rising. They only had two days, as usual. He felt the energy in his blood that was so rarely there. Only just awaking he and everyone else was the most human they'd ever be again. He wasn't sure if he was more excited than usual or not. He'd already set the detour trap, set Hucklebilly on watch for northerners, and sent Lester out watch the other end of town for trespassers til other plans came through. He figured there was no way his Daddy couldn't be proud of him this time. As he reached the house the front door was opened by a woman that reached it before him. In his excitement he hadn't noticed her on her way over. The smiling Granny Boone turned toward him before opening the door.

"Well, good mornin Rufus!" she said. He smiled back.

"Mornin Granny. I done set everythin in place already. Daddy didn't have to tell me this time." stated Rufus, proudly.

"Good boy. Where's your brother?" asked Granny.

"Other end of town. Keepin watch for now."

"Good, where's Hucklebilly?"

"He's at front end of town, keepin watch there." replied Rufus.

"Good. You comin in to see your Daddy?" asked Granny.

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Alright. I'm comin in with ya." she said. He opened the door for her and followed her in. Mayor George Buckman was walking down the stairs as they walked in. He grinned at them.

"Good mornin." he said.

"Mornin." they replied.

"Now, we gotta get that detour sign-" began Buckman.

"Already done it Daddy. Got Hucklebilly out there too. And Lester on other side of town." said Rufus proudly.

"Good work Rufus, but now what did I say about interruptin?" asked Buckman.

"To not do it." said Rufus slightly hanging his head.

"It's alright son. Go on, continue preparin things. Make sure all that oughta be up are up."

"Yes, Sir." said Rufus, charging back out the door. Buckman's grin faded as the young man left.

"I still ain't too sure bout him." said Buckman. He walked into his living room, Granny followed.

"Now, Bucky, he's doin his best." said Granny.

"It ain't his work ethics I'm worried bout." said Buckman.

"Well, there's still Hucklebilly."

"Yeah, and I can't full well call him my own can I?" asked Buckman, raising his eyebrows.

"Round me you can." said Granny, smiling.

"Uh, huh. And that's cause you know full well why don't ya Miss Boone?" asked Buckman, grinning slyly.

"I do. And you got a jubilee to run ya know. You may wanna get out there and start takin charge, you bein Mayor and all." said Granny, tapping his arm.

"How bout you get all your business in order before you start hintin at me Miss Boone?"

"I already did." she replied.

"Oh, well in that case. I'll head out now." he said, he marched past her and outside. Out in the early mornin Georgia sunshine he went about the business of giving orders for their jubilee. He really didn't need to. They'd done it so many times over the years that it was more than second nature for them to do things without even noticin him being there.

Hucklebilly sat between two trees just out of sight a few miles before the detour sign. He had a tiny field mouse in his hand and was in the process of puttin a noose on it when he heard a car in the distance. Crouching, he went toward the tree line to see. It was odd for a car to be out here this early. Regardless of oddness, there was a car and it was headed their way. He looked down at the noose and mouse in his hands.

"Damn. You lucky." he said to the mouse before tossing it on the ground. It scurried away, apparently realizing just how lucky it was. Hucklebilly turned toward Pleasant Valley and charged. Running as fast as his legs would carry him to do his job and let the town know its honourable guests were arriving early.
