I was tired. It had been an emotionally draining day. All I wanted to do was crawl into bed and not leave all weekend. I frowned as my cell phones vibrations interrupted my thoughts. "Fucking hell." I groaned, assuming it was another murder. "Rizzoli." I said without hesitation to the person at the other end of the line.
"Jane?" I would recognise that voice anywhere. My heart sank into my chest, and tears started to burn at the corners of my eyes.
"I'm coming." I said, having no doubt that was downstairs waiting to be let in. I wasn't wrong. When I opened the door she was standing with a pillow in her arms and her pyjamas on. "Come here." I whispered, pulling the defeated woman into my chest. We had just closed a case of two men killing little girls, and it had hit us both really hard. She never handled doing autopsy's on children very well. Maura was soft, she was kind and gentle and it killed me seeing her so upset.
"Are you okay?" She whispered to me as I played with her hair, her head on my chest. "Honestly?" I let silence be my answer. My hand stopped moving over her honey blonde hair as my eyes started to get that familiar burning feeling. "Hey." She said quietly, a concerned look on her face as she pulled me into her for a warm hug. That was it, I started to sob. I was so tired, so emotionally exhausted. Maura was the only person I would let anywhere near me when I'm in a mood like this. She always made it all okay for me. "I know," She whispered into my neck.
"Ugh." I groaned, sitting up and wiping my tears away. "Do you want a drink?" I offered with a laugh, slowly getting out of bed. She nodded and got up to follow me. It was cold in the kitchen and I couldn't help but shiver.
"Jane?" Mauras voice was quiet, even for her. I poured her a glass of wine as I walked toward her, raising my eyebrows so she'd continue. When she didn't go on, I knew she needed a little push.
"Maur what is it honey?" She didn't look sad anymore. She looked deep in thought. She had her honey hair pulled up into a bun and her make up from the day was fully removed. She was gorgeous.
"I think I can make us both feel a little better." I didn't say anything, again assuming she would just tell me when she was ready. I could never read her, she was so soft and gentle, all I ever saw was this beautiful, caring woman. She whispered something under her breath before she stood up and looked me dead in the eye. Something about that look made my stomach fill with butterflies.
She walked toward me, taking the beer out of my hand and placing it carefully on the marble counter top. My stomach was completely knotted at this point, my mouth got dry suddenly. She was standing inches away from me, looking from my lips to my eyes over and over again. I decided to take the first step toward what we both knew was coming.
"Maura.." I whispered, taking one of her hands in mine and placing it against my cheek, closing my eyes at the contact. I nuzzled my face into her hand, kissing her palm twice softly. I looked at her, and she let her hand slide from my cheek to knot in my hair, slowly moving her lips towards mine.
"Are you okay?" She asked me, looking at my lips as she spoke. I simply nodded, bending down so I was shorter than her, looking her straight in the eye. I let my hands find the small of her back, pulling her into our first kiss. It was soft, so soft I couldn't be sure it was really happening. I felt her exhale through her nose shakily. My hands moved underneath her shirt, tracing patterns on her back as she tiled her head, making our kiss deepen. When her tongue touched mine, my whole body felt on fire. I had never felt so sure; so clam and happy. She pulled away slightly, just enough to press our foreheads together.
"I love you." She said, her voice no longer shy or unsure.
"I love you more." I whispered back to her, pulling her into my chest and breathing in her familiar scent. Everything was okay.
