It was an ordinary Wednesday. Plain old ordinary Wednesday. Nothing important on the schedule. Get up. Go to work. Come home. Dinner with the family. Go to sleep. Repeat. Ordinary.
And Jenny hated every minute of it.
She never saw her life being like this. Since she was little she wanted to be a doctor. She wanted to work in the big city in a high-rise hospital, saving lives and caring for the ill. She wanted to get away from her small hometown. She wanted to feel free.
But life doesn't always work out the way you plan it.
After high school Jenny's father passed away so she stayed home to be with her mom. Instead of taking the scholarship to New York University, she stayed in little Manchester, New Hampshire and went to the community college in-between her part-time job at Walgreens. She eventually got her RN license and started working at a nursing home down the street. It took awhile but her mother Beth eventually began to move on and start her life over. She even started seeing some one named Jim. Jim was a nice man and Jenny was happy they had found each other. Now if only she could find some one for herself.
Jenny opened up her closet and grabbed the closest scrubs to the door. Garfield. Not her favorite pair but it would do. She slipped on her sneakers, threw her hair in a sloppy ponytail and headed downstairs. Beth and Jim were sitting at the kitchen table.
"Morning. Working until 5," Jenny said as she grabbed her purse.
"Honey, can you hold up a minute. We've got something to talk to you about" Beth said.
Jenny stopped and crossed her arms "Fine. I don't want to be late though".
"Jim wants me to move in with him and so I contacted a relator and well it all happened so quickly" Beth began to drag on.
"Mom, what is it," Jenny sighed.
"I sold the house. We need to move out by next week"
Jenny felt her mouth open.
"What?"
"And…" Jim said looking at Beth.
"And the thing is honey, Jim and I are going to travel for awhile so you need to find some place to live"
"So you're kicking me out and giving me a week to find a place? Are you serious?" Jenny said.
"Jen, it's time you grew up and moved on. Start a life for yourself" Jim said taking a sip of his coffee.
"Grow up? Move on?"
"It has been 5 years honey," Beth said getting up and putting her hand on Jenny's shoulder.
Jenny backed away. "I stayed here for you Mom. I put my life on hold for you!"
"Well I'm fine now Jenny. Now you need to do something with yourself" Beth said.
"No, now I need to go to work and find some place to live by next week!" Jenny yelled heading towards the door, which she slammed behind her.
Well it had started out as an ordinary day. She wiped the tears forming in her eyes and headed off towards work. She felt a rain drop hit her cheek. Just great. What else could go wrong on this wonderful ordinary plain Wednesday?
She ran the next 4 blocks in the rain until she reached Méchant Loup Nursing Home.
Little did she notice the blue Police Box sitting in the parking lot.
