Summary: What happens when Nikolas loves a woman who's just as broken as he is? Will they be able to find happiness?
A/N: Nikolas and Sam are NOT related in this fic. I wanted to see what I could come up with for them as a couple and this is my try.

*Love Is…*
Love is a train wreck waiting to happen. Where the conductor is too drunk or tired to stay awake; and loses control of the train so that it crashes into the nearest available thing.
At least, that was how Nikolas saw it. He stared out over the ledge of Wyndemere, his eyes searching for something but not seeing anything except the dark night surrounding him.
He felt rather than heard Sam come up behind him. She was his miracle; his once in a lifetime love, Nikolas was sure of it.
They shared pretty much the same views about love, though through it all they had somehow managed to stay together when everything around them was falling apart.
Love is putting yourself on the line time and time again, only to get the same disastrous results every single time. Telling the person you love how much you love them, only to never hear them say it back.
Sam knew this because that's how her first three relationships had been. There was always something more important than her in her first three relationships.
She wrapped her arms around Nikolas's waist from behind, smiling as she inhaled his cologne. "What are you thinking about?" Sam asked when Nikolas turned to face her.
Nikolas smiled wryly. "I was thinking about love actually and what it is. I was thinking about how two people like us finally found someone who could understand and help us deal with our problems."
Sam nodded a moment later and then said, "I'll tell you what love is. Love is when you look past another person's flaws and see the beauty in that person.
"Love is when you lose the two most important people in your life, but you still let that annoying, broken woman into your life and heart. Though at first it's only because you're lonely, but in the end it turns into love."
Nikolas smiled as he listened to Sam speak. Even though both of them had been hurt many times before, there had been something so right about being together when they had met that day eight years ago.
When Sam finally fell silent, Nikolas decided to try to put into words what he was thinking. "Love is… waking up next to you every morning and knowing that you will always be here to help fight off my demons.
"It's being sure that you'll never leave, no matter how crazy things get with this town or with my family. Love is…simply knowing that I'll have you by my side for the rest of our lives and knowing that I'll love every moment of it."
Sam smiled and then she started speaking again. "It's being able to know that some day the two of us will get married and have a family, two things I used to think would never happen to me."
Nikolas led Sam back inside Wyndemere and after closing the doors and locking them, he led his girlfriend to their bedroom.
"I love you," Nikolas said before he took Sam into his arms and kissed his girlfriend.
When the kiss ended Sam pulled back and said, "This is what love truly is. When you trust the other person more than anyone else in the world and would even die for them. I love you too, Nikolas."
