A little crossover I had to write after another fic wound up, and I found I couldn't bear the ending...after all, isn't this what fanfic is for?

Mirrith's tail twitched as she slept. In her dreams, something nudged at her. Visions of a world of flame, a sun like the Red Star but all encompassing, an unbearable heat as the world shrunk around her, first heavy then light as if nothing existed beyond her furled wings.
The thoughts of another dragon drifted into her sleeping mind. Pain, despair, grief beyond imagining. She reached with her thoughts to comfort the stranger, and realized with a start the mourning dragon was a queen, like her but not like her, more massive than Ramoth by far and a shade never known by her own kind. Red...red scales, hard and tough, unlike her own soft green-gold hide. Like any dragon she knew to her core that red meant DANGER!, but she felt the sorrow of this red and wanted only to comfort her, this ancient queen who mourned many clutches, many hatchlings...
"Who are you?" she whispered, as gently as to a terrified weyrling, focusing her mind into soothing thoughts.
"Alex..." came the fragments of a reply, drifting away incomplete even as she spoke, before fading away for good, comforted in her last by the little queen.
Mirrith woke. She rose to her haunches and keened, keened for the dragonqueen she had never known, for the lost clutches of this alien mother, for her world and all she had loved in it.
"Alexstrasza is no more!"
All Pern keened with her.
