Reflection

He stared back, golden gaze meeting the reflection on his master in the cracked and shining shards of the mirror before him. The same glowing eyes peered back, though they didn't quite hold that unique charm and false sense of security as they once possessed. The bright shade of gold lost radiance and turned cold as he disrupted the gaze, newly slitted eyes gazing over pale skin. His head turned slightly to his left and the light reflected in his round lenses, the reflection shielding his gaze deliberately from himself. With the skilled and piercing gaze unique to this medical ninja, he took in his features.

This was a face he knew and was quite acquainted with; he knew each feature better than his own, he thought. He counted each scale on his near translucently pale skin each day, knowing full well that more seemed to rise to the surface over time. Eyes drifting upwards in the glass, he looked over the wisps of silver hair that lay perfectly still against his forehead, the hood of the cloak above it casting deep shadows across his face. Looking up at the hood, his silver hair seemed to continuously grow darker with shadow until one could only see black hair beneath the heavy cloth.

He met his gaze again and everything was silent and eerily still in that moment. The only sound echoing softly in the dim and musky room was the soft hiss of the white serpent lurking at his side. He glanced over at the colorless snake, a faint smirk forming on his lips. And suddenly he didn't hear the hissing any longer. The room fell dead silent around him and his ears were ringing with a smooth and enticing voice, as luxurious as silk yet as virulent as poison to the blood. He froze as the voice echoed softly around him.

"Look at me... Kabuto..."

His gaze obediently snapped back up to the mirror as he took in his reflection once more, the smirk on his face growing hopelessly dark and twisted before his own eyes. Golden eyes met his own, the eyes of his master. And Kabuto Yakushi, like a loyal servant, answered humbly without hesitation, gaze locked with his own reflection in the glass:

"Yes, Lord Orochimaru."
