Silence
Nessa got upset sometimes.
Okay, Nessa got upset a lot.
She got upset so much, Boq knew exactly how big a deal it was just by her actions.
If Nessa was a little bit upset, she would go into her room and lock the door. Boq wouldn't bother trying to talk to her then; he knew it would be over soon.
If Nessa was pretty upset, she would scream at Boq, saying how much she hated him, herself, the world, whatever. Boq tried to calm her down, but quickly learned that it wasn't worth it. Nessa didn't mean any of the things she screamed.
When Nessa was really upset, it was the worst. She refused to talk. The silence was absolute torture. Nessa's silence could mean anything, and there was no way for Boq to know what she was thinking. This was when Boq needed to calm her down.
Boq hated the silence so much, he would even start calling her "Nessa" again instead of "Madame" to calm her.
Not that it ever worked.
When Nessa got upset like that, there was no telling when the silence would end.
