Fortune's Faded
Edward walked down a recently cleaned hallway in Central Headquarters. Eyes turned toward the red-clad boy and his companions as Alphonse's armor mad loud clanging noises when he walked. As the blonde alchemist journeyed down the numerous hallways on his quest, he greeted many friends and acquaintances with curt nods and an occasional "hello." The boy, as always, was not happy about being in the Headquarters. He never was able to stay calm as his commanding officer lectured and teased him, but Alphonse's glee at having Winry along kept Edward from lashing out at his fellow officers.
Edward turned a corner and reached the door to the anteroom to the office of his raven-haired colonel bastard. Upon finding the door locked, the blonde rapped on the door twice with his automail hand. A desperate voice called out from the inside, and Ed transmuted the lock to allow him entry. The sight of a panicked Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye handcuffed to her desk greeted the two alchemists and mechanic.
The three crossed the few meters to her desk to question if the former sniper was injured and who had restrained her. In reply to their questions, the hawk's eye told then of Roy's drunken visit mere minutes before. Something snapped in petite alchemist's head, and he dashed out the door. His mechanic and brother rushed after him, the hollow armor worried for his brother's safety and the mechanic demanding help with freeing the sharpshooter. Edward ignored both as he kept running, a single thought coursing through his body: "Save Roy."
Ed pushed through crowded streets and cut through back allies. He transmuted holes in buildings and severely injured many people, but he didn't care. All Ed knew as the fact that the man he had only just realized he loved was going to attempt to kill himself, and there was very little e could do to stop him. He had no plans whatsoever. He was simply going to rush into the colonel's apartment and try to save him.
Ed ran and ran until he came upon a plain apartment building he had visited once before. He forced his way into the building and up case upon case of stairs and then down many halls in the maze that Roy Mustang had rented an apartment. With little difficulty, Ed made his way to the black door that separated Roy's residence from public hallways. Edward kicked the door off its hinges with his automail leg and rushed into the small housing unit.
He hadn't completely moved into the living area when he heard the gunshot. The blonde ran into the living room and vaulted over the black leather loveseat in his attempt to make his way to the place of the gunshot's origin. He rushed to the corner and turned to face the colonel's kitchenette. Golden eyes widened as their owner's legs carried them farther into the room, stopping when boots met blood as well as off-white linoleum.
The fog that had previously consumed his mind vanished as Edward Elric finally realized how deeply his feelings for Roy ran. Sinking to his knees before the dead colonel, he whispered a quiet "I'm sorry, Taisa" before allowing the salty rains to flow down his cheeks. The dams holding back the sorrow and pain of the last four years finally broke as Ed cried away the death of his too-late-realized love, the loss of his childhood, the loss of Alphonse's innocence, and for the pain Alphonse could not feel. Years of ignored sorrow bubbled to the surface to be buried in the vibrant blue military uniform Ed had begun crying into.
