As promised. Am only doing one shots for now, till I decide to do a longer one. Enjoy!
He was a broken man. Not only did she talk to the one man he considered to be the enemy, she had reached a potentially lifechanging decision. One he felt he had little control over. For now at least.
She'd hidden her secret for a couple of days now. Lying awake at night pondering her future, wondering whether it was the right thing, thinking it was the best thing for them all. It was a job she may have dreamt of in the past, regular hours, doing something she specialised in. Something she was good at. Ashfordly General was a good place to work, and there was that stablility and progression she'd longed for.
Yet the decision to tell Gordon hadn't been an easy one. She couldn't predict his reaction, so by looking the positives she thought it would be ok.
With the future of the hospital uncertain, and the impending arrival of baby Ormerod, Gordon had plenty on his mind to deal with. Too much to deal with, making the shocking news that his partner, beloved wife was planning to leave the hospital she loved so dearly, the colleagues she saw as a second family, and the relationships she'd developed over the years. Leaving this all behind would've been a tough decision to make either way, one she knew would have to be discussed with Gordon.
They'd avoided each other for the rest of the day. Barely spoke unless it was work related, even then the conversations were short, avoided the subject of the possible move. They travelled home in separate cars, Jill staying slightly later to finish off her ward round, Gordon travelling home in silence, thinking over the news that Jill had just thrown on him.
To him, Jill was The Royal. They'd worked together for a very long time, and couldn't imagine working without her. To him, he loved working with her everyday, her smile, her encylopeadic knowledge that he relied on so much. They helped each other, worked on cases together, faced danger together. Yet they always came out fighting.
He felt his heart break when she delivered the news he never thought he'd hear. He always thought they'd be at The Royal forever. He knew he had to stop her, change her mind, protect her from the world like he had done so many times before. The love for them both was never stronger, the prospect of impending fatherhood had forced him to think about things. The future. Their future.
How? He wondered how he could possibly get her to rethink. Convince her she was just Adam's way of getting to Gordon, playing her for a fool. How did he know there was even a job? Was he trying to force her out?
Then a lightbuld switched on in Gordon's tired brain, using the very little energy he had left.
Discrimination. Forced out for simply being a mother.
Or was she simply trying to prove a point?
Unless he spoke to her, he would never know.
