That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But, it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been—
"Chao-san?"
"Hm?" She paused from her reading and looked up.
"Everything's all set up, and we're in formation. Ready to go?"
"Yes, I'll be right there."
Footsteps walked out of the room. She chewed her bottom lip slightly, glancing out the window. The sunset was stained across the sky, and night was slowly bleeding into it. Although the stars were starting to blink in, there was still sunlight off in the horizon.
It looked nice.
Chao looked back at the well-read book, tracing her fingers over the cover, over the faded title. To think, once, this had been her only book. Back then, she had clung to everything from the past civilizations – pictures of landscapes, photos of people she didn't know, the book she held right now – because hers had been in ruin. But now, she had everything she could have wanted – books, paintings, music, and real food.
…Of course, the future she came from didn't have any of that. Hence why she was here, prepping for what would essentially be a (passive) war. Several years of hard work, sacrifices, many twists and turns, and it would all come down to this.
Her heart began pounding, and the tattoos carved all over her body began brimming with power. She swallowed nervously and tried to compose herself. After all, she couldn't afford to mess up now.
She took a few deep breaths, and began pondering things, things that she had thought about many times before
(Can one person change the world?
Can one person alter the course of time?
Will anyone understand?
Will someone be thankful?
Is this the only way?
Is it worth it?)
but that she never bothered to answer.
After all, there was only one way to find out, wasn't there…?
She slid up on her feet and set the book aside, a half-smile on her face.
A/N: I did a series of prompts to get the creative energy flowing - one was Great Expectations. One thing lead to another, and now we have this. This drabble was the only thing I felt was worth posting, mainly because Chao is a criminally underused character.
For once, I don't have much to say. This has to be a new record for me.
