CHAPTER 1: (quite a mini chapter)

SIRIUS POV

A dark-haired girl followed Lily and Alice, trailing a few steps behind them. She was small- not in height, but in stature. She stood, hunched, as if trying to curl into herself, or disappear altogether. Her thin legs looked shaky as she walked, and Sirius could see a yellowing bruise peaking out of her sleeve, circling her delicate wrist.

She was rather average looking, Sirius decided, apart from her large brown eyes, so dark that he wagered he could see his reflection in them, if he were to get close enough. The idea intrigued him, and he catalogued it in his head to test later, if he got to know her.

When he got to know her, he decided.

Lynn, was it? He couldn't remember. He had spoken with her many times, but if he had to remember every nice girl he talked to, he wouldn't have enough room in his head for the more important things, like hexes, and quidditch.

He wandered into the great hall and slouched down next to Remus, shaking his head when he saw that the sandy-haired boy was not, in fact, ingesting his food, but making a rather nice art piece with the mashed up bits on his plate.

"Remus, dear, you've got to eat something." Sirius slung an arm over the boy's back. Remus shook it off, shooting him a glare.

"I'll eat when I please. And you sound like my mother." Sirius threw his head back and shook with laughter.

James shook his head at both of them. "You practically are his mother. All the lovey-dovey shit you two do- better be careful, someone'll think you're a pair of poofs."

Sirius tightened his arm around Remus. "I just want him to eat, that's all. If he gets an thinner he'll disappear altogether." Remus shook his arm off once again. "Besides, you do the same thing, Jamie. Don't think I didn't see you rubbing his shoulder last night, like a regular fairy"

James huffed into his mug of pumpkin juice, but Sirius didn't miss the small smile that graced his lips.

To his left, Lily and the small girl sat down at the table and immediately began scouring their textbooks intently. James quickly turned his attention to Lily, his hand flying up to his hair, a winning smile plastering his face in an instant.

"Wotcher, Evans?" She shot him a dreadful look, though it didn't hold the same determination it had in years previous.

"Nothing, Potter. Just helping Avalyn with her work."

"Ah, Evans, I didn't know you were a tutor!" His eyes lit up. "You're a saint!"

She rolled her eyes. "Oh, shut it, Potter. Anyhow, I'm rubbish at history of magic, I'm not much help at all."

The small girl- Avalyn- shook her head in disagreement, though did not voice it. She smiled tightly, and the expression looked slightly odd on her owlish features. She seemed overwhelmed; her essay was short and contained many scratched words, and she rolled her quill-hand as if in pain from writing too long.

Luckily, Sirius was never one to let someone suffer. "Well, lucky for you, our Remus is top notch in History. Even better than I am- and that's saying something." Sirius smiled proudly at Remus, who scowled at the mention of himself. "He could help you, Ava!"

Avalyn stiffened. "Avalyn."

The boys turned in surprise at her quiet murmur. Her voice was soft and strange, but held a melodic tone. "Not Ava. It's Avalyn."

Sirius nodded slowly. "Sorry then, Avalyn."

She nodded, features relaxing, and returned to the book on her lap.

Remus returned to his cuisine art, and they did not bring up the subject again, though Sirius vowed to see it through, anyhow.
