It was before the small municipal ceremony in Portland that she discovered that she couldn't take it. Diana stood in front of the mirror in the ladies restroom, just staring at herself. She turned to the side, glancing to her torso. She knew she had to marry before her pregnant belly really began to show.
Diana swallowed, placing her hand on her middle, "I'm not sure about this whole thing, but I'm going to try my best. That's the only thing I can promise you." She was already nearly four months along, but kept in shape and things so it was only noticeable if you were looking for it. Field hockey was nice like that. They wore lose shirts and worked too hard for anyone to care really. As long as you did what you were supposed to. That's all that mattered.
"Love, is everything alright?" The voice was of Dan. She kind of expected it though, being in there nearly a half hour.
"Fine. Everything is…fine." Diana's voice was shaky at best and definitely uncertain. She liked Dan a lot, but not nearly enough to marry him. She glanced to her belly again, it wasn't about her anymore. It was the small thing inside of her, the a thing that she had felt move for the first time only the day before. Almost like a sign to go through with the whole thing.
She stood up straight again, smoothing out her skirt, having dried her hair under the hand drier from the pouring rain outside. They could have just one relatively decent picture of their wedding.
Diana glanced toward the door, moving to it, but not yet opening it. She would learn to love him fully. Dan and this baby. Maybe the baby would make things better for them. Make this relationship work.
