In Cold Waters

(Challenge: In Cold Waters)

The season was leaf-bare right now. It was cold, snowy. The trees were already covered with snow and the trunks were layered with frost. The landscape seemed to be entirely white, while the wind blew snowflakes here and there. Even the lake, which was deep and on the edges of our Clan territory, was frozen completely.

I trudged through the snow, my flame-colored pelt now white because of it. I shook all the snow off with a shudder from the chilliness and kept walking with some difficulty. Pricking my ears for any danger I padded on. There was almost no prey because some animals like squirrels were curled up, asleep in their warm dens and many creatures didn't show their faces in this season.

I was out to catch prey as my leader, Rainstar, told me to. Of course I was still an apprentice but I was just about old enough to become a warrior and my ceremony won't be far. Rainstar advised me to bring a few warriors along too but I was confident and knew I could get prey in this snowstorm myself. This was very important after all. If I didn't come back with food some cats could even die!

A sudden fluttering noise interrupted my thoughts. I tilted my head to look at a bird, flapping its wings and landing on the surface of a frozen lake. I grinned and stalked over, stepping onto the lake. The surface was frozen and sturdy after all, right?

Pinpointing it and leaping, I easily caught the bird and smiled to myself. I was about to walk away back to camp when suddenly I heard a crack beneath me. My eyes flew wide and I gasped as I realized the ice beneath me was cracking, breaking into bits. I desperately tried to run, but my paws, no matter how fast they moved, were useless on the slippery ice and slush. Suddenly a whole chunk broke due to my weight and everything collapsed in that area. I was pushed into the chilly water along with heavy pieces of broken ice.

"H-help!" I yowled as my head hit the surface, but one second later I drowned again under the cold water and as the ice pushed me down, I could no longer breathe, no longer think. Just one thought filled my mind. Death and farewell.

Goodbye everyone…

Then everything fell in and I disappeared into the black depths.
