Like A Ghost To Me...

Chapter One

(Nicole's Point-Of-View)

I walk the streets of Paris, not knowing where to go. I have just been evicted from my apartment. I haven't been able to work since I was fired when they found out I was pregnant. I clutch my 2 month old baby to my chest. I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't take care of Marley. I hope I can find the family of Combeferre, Marley's father. He had died during the June Rebellion. Loosing that apartment that the two of us had shared really hit me hard. Hopefully, his parents will be kind enough to take Marley. I hope. I can probably sell my white-blonde hair if necessary, but if I can leave Marley I may be able to get a job again and not even go near the docks.
I wipe a tear from my face and kiss my daughter's cheek. She's all I have left of Combeferre, aside from the locket, which I've considered selling but I just can't bring myself to. I stop to adjust Marley's position. Then a group of sailors surround me.
"Who might you be?" One asks, staring lustfully at me.
"Please, just leave me alone." I say, trying to push past them.
"Ha, let's get her boys."
