Victor Chan shrugged on his white lab coat and sighed as he walked into the laboratory. He shut the door behind and turned back around, almost running into Jun Lu.

Victor swore. "Jun, where the hell did you come from?"

Jun turned away and walked over to the table covered with vials, microscopes, and Petri dishes. "You should know by now that I turn up anywhere." She turned back to look at Victor, her feline face expressionless.

Victor sighed. "I know, Jun. Ancestor Lu is paying to watch over me."

Jun furrowed her eyebrows. "Who told you that?"

"I'm not an idiot, Jun. I overhead the two of you talking about it."

"I didn't know you knew old Chinese."

"I've been able to pick up a few things during my life," Victor said, turning around and taking a clipboard off the wall. He began flipping through the pages.

Jun walked over to Victor. "Why were you seeing that Cathy girl yesterday?"

"Well, she is my girlfriend," Victor answered coolly. "Yesterday I had a day off, and so naturally I wanted to see her."

Jun muttered in Chinese, too low for Victor to hear.

"What was that?" Victor asked.

She glared up at him, her stern Asian face looking even fiercer. "Why do you bother with her, Victor?"

Victor furrowed his eyebrows. "What do you mean?"

Jun through her hands up in the air. "What do I mean?! What do you think I mean, Victor?! Seeing her is only going to cause you pain. Your father will kill her if she doesn't marry him, and either way you'll be left with a broken heart again."

"I don't care," Victor said as he walked to the table, his back turned to her.

"Yes you do," she said, walking over to him and ripping the clipboard out of his hands. "I see it on your face. You care more about her than anyone else. That's the only reason you took this job, so Ancestor Lu wouldn't kill her."

"Jun, this isn't any of your business. Now give that back to me."

Jun turned away and began flipping through the papers and continued in a calmer voice, "You also took this job so you might find a way to make her immortal. That's false hope, you know."

"Jun, none of this concerns you, and I'd appreciate it if you would stop trying to make it your business. Now please give me back my clipboard and leave me in peace."

Jun scowled and tossed the clipboard on the table. She looked up at Victor, her eyes flaming. "Victor, this is as much of my business as anyone else's."

"Give me one reason why this should matter to you."

She sighed, the fire in her eyes replaced by a sort of longing, an expression so rarely seen on Jun's face. She looked down as she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "You shouldn't bother with her, Victor. She's going to die eventually. Maybe Tsao will kill her. Maybe she'll die in a car crash. Maybe she'll die of old age, resenting you and your eternal youth." She looked back up at Victor. "Victor, I can't die. You and I can travel the world, and be together for eternity. Wouldn't that be great? No worries about faking a death, no wondering if your partner notices you aren't aging. Just you and me."

Victor's expression wavered. He looked away from Jun and at the cold, white walls. He didn't speak.

Jun sighed and walked closer to him. She took his hand and he looked down at her. "Just think about it, Victor." With that, Jun lightly kissed his lips and strolled out of the room, the closing of the door echoing behind her.
