Isn't Something Missing?
By: Kit Yami
"Please, please forgive me," he whispered, "but I won't be home again." It was a promise. A promise to himself, but also one to someone who couldn't, wouldn't hear it.
The snow crunched under his feet as Matthew Williams made his way up the moonlit path, the path that led away from his home and out into the North American wilderness. He slowly followed the footsteps left nearly an hour earlier. His wavy blonde hair flitted in the wind as it caught the light snowflakes that were floating from the sky.
Near the top of the hill looking out at the snowy winter landscape was him, Arthur Kirkland. Matthew's eyes were on that man; his thoughts had been completely centered on that man for quite some time. Arthur looked up at the near full moon and the words Matthew wished to hear left his lips, "isn't something missing?" But the words were not directed at him.
"You won't cry for my absence," Matthew whispered, his voice barely a breath. "I know you forgot me long ago." The young male looked down to the ground shuffling his feet in the snow. "Am I that unimportant? Am I so insignificant?" He looked back up to the man who still had not noticed his presence "isn't something missing? Isn't someone missing me?"
Matthew watched as Arthur slowly sunk into the snow. In the moonlight the quiet male could see the line of water trailing from the other's eyes across his cheeks. It was a moment of absolute still where not even his heart beats before Arthur raises his arms and slams them into the snow.
"I know what you do to yourself," Matthew whispered before he took a deep breath and shouted with all his heart, "Isn't something missing? Isn't someone missing me?" The last word echoed throughout the still cold land, yet Arthur didn't even look back at Matthew.
There is more silence before Matthew began whispering again. "Even though I'm the sacrifice, you won't try for me."
Arthur stood up from the snow wiping away the tear stains from his cheeks and brushed off the snow from his person. The Englishman turned and walked towards Matthew, passed Matthew without once noticing his presence.
Just a moment after the other had passed him Matthew collapsed into the snow. "Though I'd die to know you love me, I'm all alone." He choked out the words between sobs. "Isn't someone missing me?"
The wounds Matthew had not wrapped before he came out to watch Arthur began to seep through his coat. Blood stained the jacket, the evidence of the war was showing. Slowly Matthew's eyes closed and he lied back in the snow. The words he was going to speak had died on his lips as he fell into a sleep.
Even in his sleep the lonely heart-broken tears streamed from his eyes.
When Matthew would arise with the sun, he would no longer cry. He would stand tall and strong. He would assert himself as a nation. He would claim his country, Canada. But even as this, he would secretly protect the heart of the man he loved.
"Even though I'm the sacrifice, you won't try for me, not now. Though I'd die to know you love me, I'm all alone. Isn't someone missing me?"
A/N: Alright I'm dedicating this to WitheredLilli on YouTube, who is the Canada rper for the Dollars. She made a beautiful video using Missing by Evanescence about Canada, England, and America. Her hard work inspired this random piece out of me. So thank you for reading, love you all.
