When they had gone shopping, the shopkeeper told them the bed they bought was "king-sized". "Like the one you shall one day be" Aurora had teased him fondly. It was a lovely bed, sturdy and comfortable with the mattress they put on it. It was so, so big though, acres of empty space surrounding them at night, Phillip thought to himself.
The baby made the bed a little smaller. They slept with little Phillip between the two of them, and smiled as he slept. "Now," Phillip whispered to her as they lay falling asleep at night, "It is a bed with two kings". Aurora giggled, and pulled the comforter tighter around her to stop her back from being cold.
"Mulan." Phillip stated one night as they got ready to climb into the king bed. Aurora paused. She had missed their companion as well, missed her with a sort of ache in her chest that she could not easily explain. So it was not without difficulty that she replied "Yes, I've been wondering about her too," around the lump in her throat. "The merry men are in town," Phillip stated, cautiously, unwilling to be too forward lest Aurora feel threatened. It was with relief, then, that Aurora's demand reached his ears. "Let's find them and ask then."
Her bedroll in her tent with the Merry Men was small, but Mulan had never been one to need much space. She was comfortable in her small tent, in this new life with Robin Hood and his followers. When they were jolted into the land without magic, Mulan didn't pay much mind. She went on lighting fires and hunting dinner and when one day Robin mentioned seeing her "Old friends, that lovely couple, with a baby boy now", she barely paused in her carving of a strange animal she had seen the other day. But when she went to sleep that night, she suddenly felt very alone in her tiny bed.
They held each other's hands tightly as they entered Robin Hood's camp, their son cradled in Aurora's other arm. "Hey, you there, what's your business" demanded a burly man as they passed his tent. Phillip opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, Robin's voice interrupted. "John! these are Mulan's people." he declared. "She's in her tent over there," Robin added, pointing the couple in the right direction. "Thank you" Aurora replied softly.
Phillip Jr. was at the age where he usually slept in his cradle at night, in the corner of his parents' bedroom. The king bed, however, no longer felt epty. There was a presence at Aurora's back to keep her warm, and Mulan's arms draped around her, hands clasped with Phillip's. "Now that you both are here" Phillip said, kissing them both goodnight one evening, "It is truly a bed fit for this king."
