I wrote this really quickly and it wasn't something I intended to post but I though, why not?
This is how different Jim and Pam's story could have been. Simple.
One shot. My first.
His first day.
"Hi, I'm Jim the new salesman." Said the tall and boyish new employee. He looked like he wasn't used to wearing a suit but he put on his best smile to cover up his nerves. She instantly warmed to him.
"Hi Jim, I'm Pam." She stood and shook his hand over the counter. It was firm yet yielding. She leant in to whisper. "Remember this moment because you'll never go back to a time before you met your desk mate Dwight."
Jim was smitten.
He met Dwight.
He understood.
At lunch that day.
"I live with my fiancé Roy, he works in the warehouse."
"You're engaged?" He tried to hide the crushing disappointment in his voice. He looked at her ring for the first time and cursed himself for not seeing it sooner. He didn't think they were real diamonds.
"Yeah, but it's been two years and we haven't set a date so I don't know what that means."
"Well if he's got any sense he'll marry you tomorrow."
"Thanks." She couldn't remember the last time she'd blushed.
One week later.
Jim took two wide strides across the break room and took a seat next to Pam. Her heart jumped a little at his closeness, she could smell the last lingering hints of his sports shower gel.
"I have no real reason to know this but I feel I should tell you that the yoghurt you're about to eat is out of date."
She looked at the lid. It expired over the weekend.
"I think you just saved my life." She teased with fake wonder.
"Any time Beesly." He smiled and disappeared as quickly as he came.
She really liked him.
Later that night.
"Roy, I think we should break up."
Three weeks later.
"Hey Beesly, how's the new apartment?"
"Great, I love it there. Gets a little lonely at night though."
"Well maybe I can come over, watch a DVD, eat pizza, and regale you with tales of the wonder and adventure of being a paper salesman."
"Yeah, I'd like that."
"Cool. So it's a date."
Later that night.
"I like you."
"I like you too."
They kiss.
One month later.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
They kiss.
One year later.
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes."
They kiss.
