My Late Day Nap

It was a crisp fall day in the small town of Campbellsville, Kentucky. On the early morning of August 12th, 2002, I staggered onto my bus knowing the route always lead us to pick up some of my friends at the 'ABC Daycare'. I always wanted to go and play on the swing set with friends and have a nap in the air conditioned room. As the day lingered on my friend Sara told me many things about 'ABC Daycare' which lead me to my conclusion that I, Kendall Blair Peterson, would go there on the bus ride home. To me, a seven year old, you're supposed to obey your mom and be kind of afraid. Well more of what she'd do to you if you disobeyed her like me getting off the bus at 'ABC Daycare' instead of my Nana's house. Unusually I wasn't. The only thing I could think about was a chocolate chip cookie with my name on it and a reserved swing. Our last lesson for the day before the bus riders were told to leave was story time. We listened to the teacher as she read us the story of The Magic School Bus, as soon as the book ended the bus riders were free to go, so I went. I sat in one of the two front seats with Sara playing patty-cake or Mrs. Mary Mac until the bus stopped at the daycare. Before exiting the bus my bus driver Mia asked me, "Are you sure Kristi told you to get off here?" I smiled and answered a simple yes and walked down the stairs off the bus nearly tripping on the last step. Entering the building with Sara I was aw struck at how much more beautiful it was then I had imagined. Placing my stuff in an open cubby next to Sara's we were told to go play outside till they called us back in. As I was swinging I noticed an elderly lady that worked there was staring directly at me, at first I thought I had done something wrong but she ended up going for the boy throwing sand at the other kids behind me. Nap time had to have been my favorite thing except when the elderly lady from before woke me up in the middle of my wonderful dream. "Does Barbara know you're here?" she asked me as she gave me a leftover cookie from snack time a few hours ago. Nodding ever so slightly in my lack of sleep I rubbed my eyes as she dialed some numbers, loudly, on the phone. She smiled light heartedly at me as I heard a very familiar voice; still half asleep my brain kept yelling 'run' but my body said 'stay'. Still smiling she asked, "Barbara, did you know your granddaughters here?" freezing as she handed me the phone I clasped it with a shaking hand bringing it to my ear to hear a very happy relieved Nana on the other end telling me my mother would come get me in a little while. Handing the phone back to the women I said, "I'm going to go back to my nap now." Wondering if I wanted to wait for my mother she asked me, "Don't you want to get your things together?" I shook my head and slowly made my way back to my late day nap.
