Moving On

When Winry first receives a beautiful necklace from her boyfriend, she smiles gratefully. And when she goes home, she locks the necklace away, where she would never find it again. A few months later, her boyfriend complains that he never sees her wearing it. She is apologetic and she makes up something quickly: that her naughty dog took the necklace and dropped it into the river. She knows that it is a feeble excuse, and her boyfriend frowns, but they soon forget about it.

Her boyfriend gives her many other beautiful, costly presents to please her. She always thanks him with her appreciative smiles, but never once does she use any of the expensive gifts. Each one of them she stores away at a different location, and they never surface again. Her boyfriend is suspicious, but she assures him in that lovely voice of hers, enchanting him in a effective spell to make him forget.

When she first allows herself to be taken to bed by this charming gentleman, she is much pleasured by the tender caresses and sweet nothings whispered into her ear, and she feels guilty. She wonders how it would have felt like to have automail fingers and rough, calloused hands touch her skin, instead of smooth, warm flesh. She wonders what difference would it make to run her fingers through long, golden hair rather than short, brown curls. Afterwards, when the pain and pleasure fades, she is surprised to find a tear sliding down her cheek, but she makes no motion to brush it away.

During their wedding, she is distant. She looks into the mirror at the woman she has grown into. She looks into the reflections of her big, blue eyes, which have lost their shine, and for a split second, she is unsure of where she has locked up herself. She looks down at the elegant white wedding dress which showed off her curves proudly, and at each delicate lace and ribbon, and she looks at her bridegroom, dressed up smartly in a black tuxedo. He squeezes her hand affectionately and smiles. The smile is encouraging, but Winry just feels more faraway than ever. She wonders whether it would be any different if the man in the suit had blond hair and honey-coloured eyes.

Everyone is happy for them, and he is almost ecstatic. She can tell that she is the least mirthful of the crowd.

A year later, she bears their first child. It is a boy. He looks like an exact replica of his father, only he has a more childlike figure and a more carefree smile. All of their relatives mush over the child and say, "Oh, how cute! He looks just like his father." She feels left out, as if she does not belong. And she guesses that she really doesn't. She can hardly think of the boy as her child. She wonders what he would have looked like if the father was Edward Elric. Would he have looked like a duplicate of the man when he was a little kid, playing with her in the fields of Rizenbul?

And she keeps on wondering, dreaming about an alternate life which would never come true...

The End
