He didn't quite know what he had expected. He certainly had never anticipated her to be a wiz at the home-ex stuff. The cookie incident had been more than a small hint into that truth. But somehow, he had never, ever envisioned the scene that was before him.
They had been married for a little over two weeks, and had just gotten back to Boston after a week in Maine and a few days in Cameron.
She had gotten up before him, which was all very normal. But what wasn't normal was that she was cooking.
Breakfast.
With a Benson burner.
"Skye. What are you doing?"
"Oh! Good morning! I'm making your breakfast, what does it look like I'm doing?"
"Conducting some sort of experiment…"
She smiled, and poured some light pink liquid into his beaker of coffee which made it boil and steam.
"Yeah, well, I figured that since I'm a bit of a fire hazard using the stove and stuff, I would do a lot better if I could use tools I'm familiar with. I never have lab accidents!"
She looked so happy and so proud, that all he could do was sigh and sit down at the kitchen table, watching in awe and horror as she dropped two eggs into another beaker of boiling water and began to swirl it around over the Benson burner.
"Are hard-boiled eggs alright? I still haven't gotten the hang of any other kind."
He fought hard against the urge to tell her that he didn't really think she had gotten the hang of this kind yet, and nodded.
"Yeah, that should be fine." There was a pause, as he took in the sight of her lab coat, splattered in heaven knows what. "Um, Skye, where did you get this stuff?"
"I borrowed it from one of the labs at school."
"Which one?"
"The uranium particle lab."
Radioactive eggs… Yum.
Apparently, they were going to be eating out a lot for the rest of their lives, or at least until he could teach her to use the stove…
This one is dedicated to PUCKABRINALOVER, who asked for an An Honorary Penderwick-universe one-shot. In fact, I had so much fun writing this one, that there will most likely be many more to come. :-) So sorry...
