I'd seen him the night before, of course. I'd even danced with him and exchanged token pleasantries with him. But I didn't form a true first impression of Malcolm Reynolds until he followed me out of his ship's cargo hold and tried to convince me that my life was worth something more than I was claiming.

Of course, I already knew that. I'm no country maiden from a backwater moon, and I do just fine on my own, thank you. But all the same, I took his words to heart. Not because I needed the encouragement, but because like his ship before him, Malcolm Reynolds was giving me a vital piece of information that let me know this job was going to have something so many did not.

After all, hardly anyone flies a Firefly anymore. It takes a special sort to do that. Firefly owners are either dead stupid or stupidly brave and noble.

I'm pretty sure this captain is not dumb.

He confirms it with his words. Not stupid. But stupidly brave and noble? Oh, yes.

This man is going to try to save me, instead of contributing to my damnation.

Oh, this is going to be fun.
